Miss Gold Digger (VCD) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Finally, a must-have handbook for finding Mr. Right! Dedicated to love-craving moaners and disgruntled whiners, Miss Gold Digger is a one-stop guide to weeding out the bad apples from the goodies. In his first feature film, director Park Yong Jib hires the bubbly, effervescent Han Ye Seul (Fantastic Couple) as his leading lady (for which Han received the Best New Actress prize at the 45th Dae Jong Sang Awards), along with Lee Jong Hyuk (A Day For An Affair), Kwon Oh Joong (His Last Gift), and g.o.d's Son Ho Young, to provide some new insight into the age-old mystery of locating one's soul mate. Just as an avid shopper would know which stores to target before stepping out of the house, Han's character suggests that women too should go on a massive shopping spree for men. Her candid philosophy of "experience brings wisdom" offers some tips to those still trying to figure out the Mr. Rights from the Mr. Wrongs.

According to Mi Soo (Han Ye Seul), a "love expert" who's got all the 3 b's a woman can possibly possess (beauty, body, and brain), the first step to achieving success in finding Mr. Right is open-mindedness. Whether it be a filthy rich hunk or a total loser, Mi Soo recommends that you keep them all on your shopping list. Like the saying "if you don't try, you'll never know", Mi Soo's next step suggests a little taste of everything that's on your list. Sound agreeable? Unfortunately, there seems to be a little glitch in the handbook as our Ms. Know-It-All is about to face a major crisis in her own love fest. Take a brisk walk down the path of wisdom with our quirky heroine as she hunts for her Mr. Right!

Professional Review of "Miss Gold Digger (VCD) (Korea Version)"

February 17, 2009

This professional review refers to Miss Gold Digger (DVD) (2-Disc) (Korea Version)
The latest in an ever-growing list of girl power romantic comedies, Miss Gold Digger marks the debut of Korean director Park Yong Jib and is basically a vehicle for popular actress Han Ye Seul. As suggested by its title, the film offers a decidedly materialistic and contemporary take on the usual boy-meets-girl romance, showing again that women are every bit as capable when it comes to playing the field as their male counterparts.

The film follows advertising executive Mi Soo (Han Ye Seul, recently in Fantastic Couple), a young woman who knows exactly what she wants, namely a rich and stylish man. Aware that the path to financial security is often fraught with frauds and losers, she gathers herself a small harem of male admirers, putting in the groundwork to shape each of them to her liking. All is going well until one day she runs into trouble with grumpy though handsome neighbour Dong Min (Lee Jong Hyuk, A Day For An Affair), who coincidentally turns out to be an all-important work client. Poor Mi Soo's carefully woven web of deceit begins to unravel and it becomes clear that sooner or later she will have to make a decision not only as to which of her many beaus she wants to shack up with, but whether or not her whole philosophy on life has been wrong.

As can be gleamed from the plot, Miss Gold Digger is very similar in terms of theme to other recent efforts such as The Art of Seduction, Seducing Mr. Perfect and others. However, in this case the film actually features very little in the way of traditional romance, with Mi Soo's rather cold and calculating quest not being for love but for the two things she apparently finds most important in life - money and strings to pull. This is fair enough of course, though it does give the film a more cynical edge than might have been expected, with hints that there may be a saccharine sweet heart lurking somewhere beneath the surface never really coming to anything.

Mi Soo certainly makes for a morally dubious protagonist, juggling boyfriends (and always on the lookout for new paramours), lying, and generally being manipulative, vain and materialistic - not exactly a great role model or indeed particularly likeable, especially for male viewers. It is not until an hour and a half into the film that she displays any real emotion, and her eventual, inevitable romance with Dong Min doesn't really work, mainly as she only seems to want him because he doesn't like her, and since he seems as if he really couldn't care less either way, with his only hint of affection coming when he decides to beat the living hell out of another potential boyfriend. Still, none of this is actually a problem and does not make the film any less entertaining - indeed, though obtuse and difficult to sympathise with, Mi Soo is pleasingly different from most other romantic comedy heroines. Also to its credit is the fact that the film sticks to its guns and doesn't introduce the usual kind of last minute redemptive transformation, and it scores points for avoiding any slide into needless melodrama.

Thankfully, the film works much better a comedy than a romance, and Mi Soo's shameless lack of morals and single mindedness are generally quite amusing, as are the numerous wacky scrapes she gets into in her quest for self-fulfilment. Some of the situations she ends up in with her silly and strangely unsuspecting suitors are pretty funny, mainly since they are such a daft bunch of stereotypes that it is impossible to feel sorry for them. Han Ye Seul is just about charismatic enough in the role to allow Mi Soo to fall on the cute side of cheeky and to make her an acceptable sassy clone rather than being simply unpleasant. This is vital to the film's moderate success, since she is in nearly every shot, with many sequences being thrown in simply to give her an excuse to show off yet another costume or to flutter her eyelashes at the camera. Amusingly, rather than any of her co-stars, the only thing she has to compete with for attention and screen time is the constant barrage of mobile phone product placements.

As a result, despite its rather unoriginal premise and amoral approach, Miss Gold Digger makes for surprisingly entertaining and winning viewing. Although it skimps on the romance and lacks any genuine sense of emotion, it works well enough as a feisty slice of comedy which should be especially enjoyable for female viewers.

If my DVD plyer was compatible Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
If my DVD plyer was compatible it would have been better. Ended up watching on the computer after changing DVD region code on the reader which was a big deal because my PC said it could only change region codes 4 times in a lifetime.

Han Ye Sul is my absolute favorite and she can play semi-devilish roles like an angel. She really carries the movie. The story itself is cute & entertaining enough. But the ending was abrupt and kind of left us feeling "Egh."

Also, they should have put English subtitles on the initial menu as well as the bonus features. It took me a while to figure out which icon to push for the English subtitles to appear, and I was disappointed to find the Bonus clips had no subtitles available.

Miss Four Funny Persona's Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Essentially, you have here another S Korea movie that covers every nook and cranny of screw ball comedy dizziness, breezy off the wall charm and insanity, as hot chick Mi Soo pursues four men of varying status, in her utmost wish to land a very prosperous and ideal Mr Right! Whether this film could be a woman's strategical blue print for obtaining Mr Right, though, is any body's guess. But if it is, Mi Soo's modus operandi to land that ideal man, certainly requires her to have a high dose of female eccentricity and ballsiness (and numerous persona's!), to do so. Mi Soo reckons that her Mr Right, though, could be located from any background or status, and so not too fussy that her Mr Right may have all the mod cons that she would prefer to begin with, she can nurture them to the requirement she desires. Although Min So is shown on the onset as a sweet and pure virginal Miss Perfect, pious in prayer, surrounded by lots of children and revered by all the little kiddie's mums as a possible perfect daughter in law, its not soon before you realize that this is Mi Soo's modus operandi in action - as she fits into an angelic persona type, to land one of her four men. In this case, Mi Soo goes for the One (not not the g.o.d. singer, I'll come to h.i.m. in a minute), who is Joon Seo (played by O Joong Kwon) a wealthy born-with-a-silver-spoon-in-the-mouth type, that loves a pious female type, due to his own religious leanings, and seeing that Mi Soo is the virginal sweet girl (actually in her crafty sweet persona mode), falls in love with her. With her Man Hunt well under way, she soon finds Joon Seo the admiring type, as he immediately takes a shine to Mi Soo, and having a penchant in kissing her hands and fingers quite passionately. Unperturbed by this hand attention, Mi Soo feels success as she finds Joon Seo to be always the gentleman type, (and of his additional wealth that is one of the main reasons she doesn't immediately slap his face, due to his over interest in her hands). Could he be Mr Right? Well, Joon Seo becomes a right something or other later on, but he's not the only one in Mi Soo's fella hunt

Three other men enter Mi Soo's Mr Right plan - Yoon Cheol (performed by "Once Upon a Time in High School" actor O Joong Kwon) as a graduate student studying for his bar exam to eventually enter a career as a District Attorney and a possible big wealthy career man. A young up and coming rap singer DJ Hyeon Joon (yep, its Ho Young Son from g.o.d.) who keeps Mi Soo happy in her late night clubbing sessions, and who she feels could be a possible wealthy s.t.a.r. one day. Then theres her neighbor, the smooth and cool takes-no-flak type, Dong Min (played by Jong Hyuk Lee), who she takes a liking to due to his looks and business acumen - being also associated to her own job as a telecommunications executive. All these four men, Mi Soo tries to woe in varied fashion concerning their characteristics, but generally gets herself into hot water doing so. At one point, she berates the student Yoon Cheol about him having a lack of zest in getting his law bar degree (in fact she's more like a mum to Yoon Cheol, than a possible g.f.) , and additionally brings some meat into the Buddhist temple Yoon Cheol prays in - for a meal they eat together. But this meat offends all the temple elders who have a strict rule of no meat allowed, and lands Yoon Cheol in trouble. Suddenly becoming genuinely sacrificial, Mi Soo asks the elders for herself to be punished instead of Yoon Cheol, and so takes the punishment of 1000 bows in front of the Buddha - to reprieve Yoon Cheol's disobedience. This of course being Mi Soo's continual zany method of pleasing her suitors, so in this case her sacrifice is to encourage Yoon Cheol's compassion, and for him to to get his bar exam sorted pronto - and eventually make some wallet fattening money for her!

So it goes, as Miss Gold Digger (a.k.a. Miss Four Funny Persona's!) nurtures and figuratively prods her four male Mr Maybes (or Mr Possibles) towards Mr Right status, and finally making her choice to who is the best catch. So Mi Soo 'waters' all four men (i.e. berates, demands, acts coquettish, becomes radiantly pious, raps with Mr DJ and does errands for Mr Smooth), to win over four hearts for her to choose from. Hence Mi Soo's watering can pose on the DVD cover with her 'growing' her flower pot men into fully bloomed goldmine husbands. Considering that none of these men, though, are typical Mr Rights by their foibles, habits and limited characteristics, Mi Soo as her work cut out. Constantly moving from one date to another, getting drunk and getting late for work with her nightclubbing sessions with Hyeon Joon, getting her fingers constantly kissed by Joon Seo a little bit more than she desires - eventually bringing disastrous results! But dating these 4 men, who all have various opposite credentials to Mi Soo's listed requirements, all become challenges in her pursuits. In a minor sense, Mi Soo becomes a little schizoid in the fashionable way of attaining her goal, as she moves from date to date, trying to keep under wraps to each guy that she is seeing three other men, and showing the kookiness of the gal in question here. Although there are four guys in play here, it soon becomes realized that the Mr Right she is looking for, is pretty well on her doorstep, too. At one stage, coming home drunk from a nightclubbing session, Mi Soo confronts her neighbor Dong Min in an elevator as she makes her way to her apartment, but throws up all over Dong Min's trousers when he enters the elevator. Mi Soo then ends up having to clean his trousers (her persona shift here is to please Dong Min at all costs to win his favor), and to also do additional errands Dong Min requires (in a similar "100 Days with Mr Arrogant" style).

Eventually, as the film nears the conclusion, all things go calamity Mi Soo, as only they could when a plan like this is put to the test. A fight ensures at one point when Mi Soo finds Yoon Cheol with another woman, and nearly gets beaten up by her neighbor Dong Min for being such a 'cad'. Although I felt in Yoon Cheol circumstances, it was the befitting thing, considering that he was always getting berated to get his bar exam homework done by Mi Soo - she was like his mum! But even more revelations are beheld when you learn why Jon Seo likes to kiss Mi Soo's fingers so passionately, which is quite a surprise for her...and a red hand marked slapped face he gets, too! In the end, you begin to wonder if Mi Soo really knows who her Mr Right is after all - Mr Student, Mr d.j., Mr Smooth/Cool or Mr Finger Licking Not So Good! The dilemma!

Personally, I found this film an entertaining and eccentric romp and actress Ye Seul Han is excellent as the quite mad and kooky Mi Soo. In a certain way this film could almost seem like an 'add on' to the similarly zany character she played in the TV series "Perfect Couple". But if you really like these crazy off the wall madcap K-comedies, you should really like this, too! She does some funny things, like giving Yoon Cheol a religious symbolic mat as a good luck charm to stuff down his pants, to help him pass his bar exam. By her cute, likable nature, though, you can't help feeling sometimes that she's a bit too self focused by it all. Mi Soo's lovely, but oooh, a fella would need a hefty bank credit, a mega earning job and life avoiding happy factor to win the perfect needing heart of Mi Soo here. But to her cute credit, she does take on four guys with happy heart, to help them get better creditability for someone, and to nurture them to that ideal format.
