Mon-rak Transistor (A Transistor Love Story) is part of a new crop of films emerging from Thailand that are receiving high critical acclaim on the global festival circuit. The winner of numerous Thai Film awards in 2001, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang's (6ixtynin9) bittersweet comedy musical tells the story of Pan, a young dreamer with aspirations of pop stardom.

After marrying his sweetheart Sadaw and bestowing upon her his prize possession - a transistor radio, Pan is drafted into the army to do his military service. At the earliest opportunity, however, Pan deserts and heads for Bangkok to pursue his dream of becoming a singer. Sadaw tracks him down, only for a twist of fate to send Pan running again, on the very night of his big, breakout concert.

The film has a quirky sixties retro feel to it, with beautifully colored photography punctuated by a selection of charming sixties pop songs. An almost impossible film to pigeon hole, Mon-rak Transistor has a unique charm and it is difficult not to get caught up in its unfolding melodrama.

　　鄉下仔彭仔（蘇柏岡傑素雲飾）愛發歌星夢，與懷孕五月的砂都（絲莉雅空佩卡凡莎飾）新婚不久，即被徵召服役，與愛妻分離。彭仔寂寞難奈，每想起砂都芳容，只好憑歌寄意。彭仔無意地參加了由當紅樂團主辦的歌唱比賽，以歌藝超卓勇奪亞軍，更被邀請成為樂團一份子，但條件是：他要棄兵潛，遠赴大城市曼谷唱歌去也﹗彭仔思前想後，還是決定當上逃兵，跟樂團去曼谷闖闖名堂。彭仔苦等多時，不愜意的生活令他氣燄全消，上天最終決定給他機會；一次代唱他竟把全場觀眾懾住，無不感動流淚，一顆新星從此誕生﹗彭仔滿以為冷手執個熱煎堆，畢竟是浩劫一場。演唱會後眾人慶功，樂壇經理蘇華（森力沙迪高飾）竟企圖污辱彭仔，他出於自衛，錯手殺死蘇華。彭仔唯有亡命天涯，最後難逃冤獄。離家多年，彭驀然回首，懷念著鄉間河畔小屋的簡樸生活。遠在天邊的砂都和孩子，不知何時才能相聚？
　　Boasting retro chic, lideable young leads and a very hummable soundtrack, this bittersweet melodrama charts the trial and tribulations of aspiring young Thai folk singer Pan (Kitsuwan). The film opens with him languishing in jail, and is narrated in flasback by a sardonic guard. We return to the first flush of Pan's youth, when he performs triumphantly at the country fair and wins the hand of local girl Sadaw (Pukkavesa) despite disapproval from her father. The spell is broken when Pan is conscripted to the army, but he leaves Sadaw an old radio (the "magic-love transistor" of the title), and tells her to listen out for him. Despite his talent and good looks, however, all does not go to plan ....
