Winning musical melodrama

Among the many great Shaw Bros. movie musicals, I believe "Moonlight Serenade" is very underrated. The music, based primarily on familiar Chinese folk melodies, is superb, the cinematography is both imaginative and lush, the direction is energetic, the melodramatic story is gripping, and the acting performances are uniformly solid. It all works in this wonderful motion picture! Not surprisingly, "Baby Queen" Li Jing (who was only 18 years old when "Moonlight Serenade" was filmed) really stands out. She gives one of her bravest performances as the strong-willed, yet girlish, young shepherdess. The actress Li Ting also does a fine job in her role as the hard-luck victim who hangs herself. It is especially poignant to note that the lovely Li Ting actually did commit suicide by hanging herself in her Shaw Bros. dorm room shortly after the filming of this movie was completed. By the way, I must disagree with the previous reviewer. The ending of this film is anything but an anticlimax! "Moonlight Serenade" is very, very highly recommended by your humble servant. |

Li Ching is quite witty in this film. The film was beautifully shot but the ending was a bit of an anti-climax. A bold theme to tackle, spoiled by phrases taken word for word from another movie "The sheppard girl". Nevetheless still a good movie to watch. |
