時は第二次世界大戦下。かつてコミュニストの闘志だったバルニー（リヴァ）は、アルプスの村に逃げ込んできた。その村には小さな教会があった。バルニーは宗教を嘲弄してやろうと、その教会の告解室に入る。そこには若い神父モランがいた。心動かされたバルニーは、モランが彼女に課した償いの行を拒絶することが出来なくなってしまう。彼女はモランの訪問を重ねていくうちに、彼を愛するようになってしまう。しかし、モランは神への誓いを破ることができない。やがて彼らは自分たちの運命を受け入れて、別れを決意する・・・。
