The supernatural saga of Kyogokudo continues on the big screen in
Moryo no Hako, a.k.a.
The Shadow Spirit. Directed by Harada Masato (
Spellbound, Densen Uta),
Moryo no Hako is based on the second novel in acclaimed mystery writer Kyogoku Natsuhiko's best-selling series which began its life on the big screen in 2005 with director Jissoji Akio's
Ubume no Natsu. The core cast from the first film return for
Moryo no Hako, with esteemed actor Tsutsumi Shinichi (
Always - Sunset on Third Street) reprising his leading role as a mystery-cracking Shinto priest in postwar Tokyo. Popular, prolific stars Rena Tanaka (
Giniro no Season) and Abe Hiroshi (
Trick) are also back as a reporter and a private eye with special powers, respectively, along with an illustrious cast that includes veteran Emoto Akira (
Ai no Rukeichi, screenwriter/actor Kudo Kankuro, Kuroki Hitomi (
Kaidan), and Kippei Shiina (
Sakuran) stepping in for Nagase Masatoshi.
Fear settles over Tokyo as boxes stuffed with the mutilated corpses of young girls begin popping up, one after another. The case takes on even greater urgency when a famous actress's daughter goes missing. The actress hires private detective Enokizu (Abe Hiroshi) to find her daughter, while in other parts of town writer Sekiguchi (Shiina Kippei), reporter Atsuko (Tanaka Rena), and police officer Kiba (Miyasako Hiroyuki) begin their own investigation into the case. As people and clues cross over, they all end up at the doorstep of bookstore owner and Shinto priest/exorcist Kyogokudo (Tsutsumi Shinichi) whose skills they'll be needing to battle the evil at work. The murders seem to be connected to a mysterious psychic who prays to boxes and a strange box-shaped building that houses shocking secrets...
