抗日戰爭打響了，娘（斯琴高娃飾）正帶著一家子收麥子，準備給二女兒穗兒辦喜事，鬼子突然襲來，為了不讓糧食落在鬼子手裡，兒子滿倉親手點燃所有麥子，而未過門的女婿也被日本人炸死，娘原本就簡陋的家又被鬼子洗劫一空。
孟氏素來與娘有過結，找來在日本人那兒做事的兒子，欲對娘實施報復，讓娘當著全村人到孟家門口下跪賠罪。兒子滿倉受不了這份羞辱，娘依然長跪不起，只為了保全栓子一條命。在娘的安排下，穗兒與栓子成親。穗兒懷孕，栓子從軍。
娘的兒子滿倉與孟氏女兒靈芝相戀，卻遭到孟氏百般阻撓。娘勸滿倉與靈芝割斷情絲，令滿倉很是痛苦。一次意外中，靈芝被鬼子糟蹋。孟氏心疼女兒，反過頭來求娘應允兩個孩子的這門親事。娘得知內情後，深明大義，沖破種種阻力，為滿倉和靈芝舉辦了婚禮。
