Kent Cheng, best known abroad as the portly Porky Wing in the Once Upon a Time in China series, directs and stars as the titular Mr. Smart in this situation comedy feature from 1989. Following the success of his critical favorite Why Me? (1985), Kent directed himself in a slew of amiable character set pieces. Character is certainly the name of this film's game; in addition to Kent's ever-radiant Once Upon a Time in China costar Rosamund Kwan, Mr. Smart showcases an array of Hong Kong's finest character actors, including Cheung Kwok Keung (Peking Opera Blues), Shing Fui On (Blue Jean Monster) and Lisa Chiao Chiao (One-Armed Swordsman).

Mr. Smart, the self-styled "smartest man in Hong Kong," returns home from a tour of duty as a merchant seaman to find his intellectual crown challenged by a brainy new lodger (Cheung). The two would-be eggheads soon butt heads, but the headstrong men are forced to put their heads together when the family homestead is cited for a zoning violation. With just six months to raise enough money to construct a new residence, everyone chips in to make their home-based short order restaurant a success. But Mr. Smart's know-it-all attitude threatens to derail the business when he begins to meddle in the personal affairs of the customers.

　　Mr. Smart Considers himself the smartest man of Hong Kong. To this assessment, his mother takes strong exception. When he comes home from a seafaring job, he is angered by the fact his mother has rented out his room to a teacher. It takes, some great effort by his sister to concile him. Then her driver boy friend offends Mr. Smart. But soon they make up. The teacher talks Mr. Smart into starting a quick food ship. Thanks to the patronage of the students, the shop has its ups and downs. Then Mr. Smart discovers the students are making fun of him……
