(1)YesAsia Editorial Description
Based on a short story by Nobel Prize-winning author Kawabata Yasunari, lighthearted road film Arigatau-san (a.k.a. Mr. Thank You) follows the rolling wheels of a country bus manned by a driver who says "thank you" to everyone he encounters. "Mr. Thank You" drives into various humorous and telling episodes with different passenger and travelers as he rumbles his way through the mountainous countryside. Released in 1936, Arigatau-san highlights common Shimizu motifs of location shooting, constant movement, and heartwarming sentiments, while at the same time subtly addressing real-world worries like Depression-era woes and the condition of Korean laborers.

"Mr. Thank You" may be Japan's first "road" movie; it tells of a bus trip from Izu to Tokyo. The movie begins with a light-hearted tone, but deepens during the course of the trip. Along the way, the bus makes several stops, various riders get on and off, and we witness the intriguing interactions among the various bus riders. We learn that the handsome young driver (known as "Arigato-san" for the thanks he calls to everyone as they yield the road for his bus) is an integral part of the community, as he relays messages along the way and agrees to make purchases in the big city for the small town folk. We meet a mother and her 17 year old daughter traveling to Tokyo, where out of economic necessity the daughter will be sold into prostitution. The mother tells friends about the purpose of their trip to Tokyo; the shamed daughter beseeches her mother to "tell them I'm visiting relatives." We become acquainted with a brassy young woman who wears modern dress, drinks, and smokes. She seeks to warn the 17 year old about Tokyo ("The city is full of badgers and sly foxes"); one senses that she has hard-earned personal knowledge of that fact. She encourages the bus driver to use his savings to buy the teenaged girl out of prostitution and to marry her. And we meet a lecherous man wearing a fake handlebar moustache, who seeks every opportunity to prey upon the 17 year old girl. The movie clearly is a product of the Great Depression. Its panoramic view of Japan reveals a nation in which everyone seems to be on the move, either on the way to bigger cities in search of economic opportunity or on the way back home after failing to find work. The film was shot on location along the route from Izu to Tokyo and offers spectacular views of Japan circa 1936. The movie ends before the bus arrives at its destination, so the viewer is left to wonder about what lies ahead for its characters. I find that this lack of resolution leaves me eager to watch the film again to become better acquainted with its characters. I can recommend "Mr. Thank You" very highly for all fans of classic Japanese cinema. |
