Neither an ordinary J-Metal nor a typical Eurasia
| What really sets this band apart from any other Japanese rock or metal band is its capitalizing on a heavy Japanese theme, not only in attires worn by each member but also in some musical elements. For example, on track #6 you can hear the female vocal, Kuroneko, singing throughout the song in an "Enka"(popular Japanese music for older generations) style using a heavy nasal voice. I am not a big fan of Enka but I thought Onmyoza's experiment with this hybridization was musically brave and very interesting to listen to. I woudn't rate the male vocalist too highly for his voice reminds me too much of tens of thousands of other J-pop singers. Nonetheless, the female vocalist has an exceptional ability to express herself in many different musical languages such as Enka, metal, and pop. My favourite, however, was her metal style. She has a very powerful, almost androgynous voice at times. Think of Queensryche. Double guitars are reminiscent of British-metal, especially Iron-maiden. In fact, some guitar parts definitely reflect its influence. Overall, this album is worth listening to. If you are looking for a good, headbanging power metal album, this is definitely not it. However, it strikes a good balance between Euro style rock/metal and J-pop. In terms of J-metal if you think Loudness is too heavy and X-Japan too soft, this is it. |
