While at the peak of his career in the mid-1980s, Canto-pop legend Alan Tam bravely dropped his good clean pop star image to play a villainous killer in director Ronny Yu and writer/producer Raymond Wong's dark comedy Mummy Dearest. Released under the banner of the '80s Hong Kong movie powerhouse Cinema City, the film has Stanley Kwan serving as one of the assistant directors at around the time he made his full directorial debut with Women. Surrounding Alan Tam in this amusingly shocking tale are veteran actors Bill Tung, Tang Bik Wan, newcomer Tang Lai Ying, and Alan's Wynners bandmates Bennett Pang and Danny Yip.

Lee Kam Lun (Alan Tam) may look like a Mr. Nice Guy, but underneath his bespectacled handsome looks hides a warped, psychopathic mind caused by childhood traumas of seeing his junkie father beat his mother. One night, Lun accidentally kills a drug addict, and then there's no return. The next day, he is enraged to read in the papers that homicide detective Pang (Bennett Pang) speculates that the murderer is a mentally challenged and impotent man. Lun makes an anonymous call threatening to kill Pang's wife, but his action arouses the suspicions of Inspector Bill (Bill Tung). Knowing that Lun is a filial son, Bill intentionally woos his mother (Tang Bik Wan). Lun, fearing for his mother's safety, decides that he must kill Bill...

Lee Kam (Alan Tam) is an unbalanced person. One night, Lee killed a young drug addict by accident. In the newspaper the next day, Detective Pang (Pang Kin Sun) of the homicide section was quoted saying that the suspect was an impotent person of low intelligent quotient. Lee is so upset that he threatened to kill the detective's wife. Pang's partner, Tai discovers that filial piety is Lee's weakness. Therefore, he counts Lee's mother, Ho Pak Chi with the intention to find more clues. Lee is entrapped by Tai and believes he has killed his own beloved mother. He becomes hysterical. Finally Lee is apprehended to face trial.
