Rom-com favorites Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore team up for the crowd-pleasing Music and Lyrics. Grant plays Alex Fletcher, a former 80s pop idol now limply cruising on what fame he has left by apathetically working the nostalgia circuit. The ever-cynical Alex gets a chance to be relevant again when he is asked to write a song for teen idol Cora (Haley Bennett). The problem is he has only four days and not an ounce of inspiration, having never written song lyrics in his life. Alex then enlists the aid of his plant-watering assistant Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), who is actually a very talented writer with self-esteem issues. When it comes to romantic comedies and dapper, self-deprecating roles, there is no better candidate than Hugh Grant, and fans of the genre will no doubt find Music and Lyrics a pleasant watch. The film is written and directed by Marc Lawrence who knows a thing or two about romantic comedies himself, having previously helmed Two Weeks Notice and written both Miss Congeniality titles.
