Mika Nakashima, with her sultry voice and distinctive public image, has distinguished herself as one of the more unique artists in the Japanese pop world. Sixteen months after the success of her second album Love, she returns with Music. While the result is an uneven mix of mainstream pop and alternative music, Music is still a rather impressive outing for the 22-year old diva. The album kicks off with the beautiful Sakura Iro Mau Koro, a timely single that stands out from the annual barrage of musical tributes to Japan's favorite flower with its simple yet elegant arrangement. The slow 5-minute ballad may not be the best way for Mika to capture her listeners' attention, but it’s a beautiful song nonetheless. Music continues with a sense of elegance courtesy of Oborozukiyo~Inori, Hi No Tori, and Kumo No Ito. The three tracks share a connection in that new twists are brought to old formulas; Oborozukiyo~Inori is an old folk song with new lyrics and a new chorus added in, Hi No Tori is the theme song for the anime of the same name created by Osamu Tezuka (known to some as the "God of Manga"), and Kumo no Ito is an interpretation of a story of the same name written by Akutagawa Ryuunosuke in 1918. The exquisite melodies of the first four tracks and Mika's unique vocals give the album a great start and enormous potential. Unfortunately, the album returns to the safer territory of lighter tempos and heavier commercialism starting with Rocking Horse and Carrot & Whip, both relaxing and fun tracks that lighten the mood drastically. While there's nothing wrong with commercialism in music, when an artist such as Mika does it in this album, she seems more confined than comfortable. By the time the album returns to a more distinctive style with Seven and Fake, Music has started to wear out its welcome. Fortunately, the album goes out strong with the heartbreaking Hitori, which exudes the rare elegance the album possessed at its start. As a collection of individual songs, Music is far more satisfying. The faster songs on the second half will attract those who like their music light (particularly Rocking Horse, Shadows of You, and Seven), and the first 4 tracks have even higher replay value for those who don't want to invest an hour for the whole album. Meanwhile, Mika's vocals fit perfectly with each song's mood and she delivers them flawlessly; Mika's ultimately the star here, and her presence elevates Music to an exceptional pop album. Nevertheless, there is an inherent problem in Music: all its songs seem to be produced as singles rather than parts of a coherent whole. As an album, Music becomes slightly too long for the casual listener, even though the arrangement is well calculated. However, it does travel such a wide spectrum of musical genres that no matter what time of day, if you're looking for a good song to listen to, Music will most likely have something for you. Some good, some bad
|
This album is 50/50, I didn't like a lot of songs, but there was some songs that I really liked. The bad songs were really slow and had way too simple music for my liking. My favorite tracks were "Rocking Horse" and track 2, especially the second song, because the melody, music and singing is so gorgeous. Mika has a beautiful voice, but I don't like all the songs she sings. |

Beautiful album
|
With Mika's beautiful voice, as well as her powerful songs, this album is great! The songs in this album lean more to ballads and jazz, like all of Mika's previous albums. However, the whole album (except for one track) has a very dark feel. Though it's great, it'd be nice to hear things that sound a little more happy, like Sakurairo Maukoro. Track 1 (Sakurairo Maukoro) is a powerful and uplifting ballad about love and cherry blossoms. Mika's vocals are very emotional in this song and she grabs your attention right at the beginning. The best and most moving part of the song is at the end where she seems to go full out and delivers a phenomenol performance. Track 12 (Fed Up) is a really emotional rock ballad. This song definitely stands out among the others because it sounds rather dark and mysterious in the beginning, but totally surprises you and overwhelms you with emotion. I don't think anyone could perform this song as good as Mika. Her dark vocals definitely match this enchanting rock song. A nice album with some very beautiful tracks, with some very beautiful vocals. However, the dark theme somewhat drags the album and I personally find some of the album tracks lacklusters because of that. Recommended for all. |

In my opinion, this album has too many jazzy numbers. I'm not too much of an advocate for jazz and the album becomes boring at certain intervals. Bt I'm particularly surprised ts the song "Fed up". It's great rock music; rising to a crescendo and she handles it pretty well. I don't really like the song "FAKE" and "Rocking Horse". its boring jazz to me. However I wld like to comment on her efforts for the rest of the songs. She sang them with such beautiful emotions. |

In MUSIC Mika sings a buffet of varieties, showing off her skills!! Of course, the single songs are unmistakably masterpieces of Mika, but I would like to add album songs 'Fed Up'. 'Hitori', 'Kumo no Ito" to the hit-list. The jazzy songs are not as good as the ones in Mika's LOVE album, but all other songs are wonderful. You would never get tired of listening to this album. I find her voice very versatile, as to I find it difficult to explain why I love Mika's voice so much. I must add that the album pictures are veryyy creative- just like any other Mika photo shoots!! This album is a must-get for your Jpop music collection. |

Never, in the four years leading up to this review, have I found Nakashima Mika's albums revolting. With all the less than wonderful music that I've heard here in America I for one can certainly appreciate someone like Mika who actually has the kind of vocal talent you don't hear very often. This album in particular, like everything else she's done, is one of those things that makes you think... 'It's impossible to resist such a pleasant sound.' The best songs on the disc are practically all the six single tracks (especially 'Hi no Tori' is a lovely and smooth Adult Contemporary ballad) but all the other songs make for a truly exceptional (Adult Contemporary?) pop album, indeed...and possibly the best album released in 2005, at a tie with Mika's own 'Best.' My advice: if you love listening to good music, pick up something like this anyway. And if you do, don't forget to buy her other albums as well. Later. |
