Yay for Mutt Boy!

This movie is laugh out loud funny! If you are a Jung Woo-Sung fan, it is a must see. Jung Woo-Sung should definitely do more comedy! Great film. Interesting characters. Well done. |

Stray Doggy grows up
|
"Mutt Boy" sneaks up on you, draws you in, and, by the end of the film, has you cheering for its very peculiar hero. The mutt boy of the title, called Stray Doggy in the film, is played by Jung Woo Sung. Throughout most of the movie, I found Mr. Jung's performance to be bizarre. He seems to be hiding behind his shaggy hair, with his head down and looking side to side. Late in the movie I figured out that Jung is acting out his name; he is behaving like a stray dog ... which makes sense since his character's main companion throughout his lonely childhood was an abandoned dog. While the film's meandering narrative takes many detours, it is always interesting and ultimately proves to be an affecting and exciting coming of age story. Mr. Jung's effective performance is matched by nuanced acting by the young woman who becomes his shy love interest and by the man who plays his father (who memorably played the father of Son Ye Jin in "Alone in Love"). It took a while to warm up to the very strange Stray Doggy, but once I did I was enthralled and you will be, too. Very highly recommended. |

Cute movie
| Jung Woo-sung is adorable. He plays, as a friend of mine phrased it, one of the coolest loosers you'll ever want to meet. Stray Doggy (Jung Woo-sung)cruises through life, not yet sure of what he wants to do. He dropped out of school after a fight with some bullies who stole his dog, whom he had been very close to. Later, his father brings home a young woman, who had been caught trying to steal a purse, to be their maid. Although the love story between this young woman and Stray Doggy is understated, it is very cute nonetheless. The bully that was responsible for stealing his dog turns up later and Stray Doggy finally gets a chance for revenge. What happens? You'll just have to watch it to find out. |

Jung Woo Sung's Acting Ability
|
Mutt Boy This movie marks a departure for actor Jung Woo Sung and demonstrates his versatility as an actor. Commonly known for his roles as slightly larger-than-life characters, we see him take it down a knotch to act in a humble role, below his established stature. The result was an amazing performance showing an absence of ego which dog some many Korean stars, as he plays the role of village idiot in a touchingly woven story which takes place which takes place in back yard Korea. There is a refreshing reality and honesty in this movie which adds authentity to the story. It is stripped of special effects and fireworks, leaving the actor and cast to weave their rich story. Throughout, Jung remains in character. There is something of a method actor in him. At the moment of shooting any scene, one imagines that he actually runs through the gambit of emotions rather than to pretend. A must see. Be on the look out for this actor. He is uncommonly talented. Quin Leon |

strange beginning, strong ending
| I saw this movie on a lazy afternoon. First I thought it's really strange and not too bright-similiar to its star Jung Woo Sung, who plays the not too bright son of a local criminal inspector. Have you seen him in Musa? Here, he is talking in the heavy dialect of the Pusan area (which became somewhat popular since the Korean blockbuster "Chingoo - Friend") and his only friend seems to be a shiddy dog (that's actually the literal korean title). But as the story continues, there's an amazing amount of fun and even romance-sort of. Enjoyable! |

Give this movie a chance!

If you go into this movie expecting a typical Korean comedy then yes you'll be disappointed because it is not. In my opinion the way this movie has been advertised has probably harmed it i.e. as a comedy. This is a very touching movie with thoroughly developed and likeable characters but never over the top, it's always hovering right at the mark. And Woosung's character is by no means stupid, that's the whole point, that society sees these people as stupid or worthless yet they're the ones who "get it" and are just as smart as those who are highly educated. And I have new found respect for Jung Woo Sung, he blew me away both as an actor and as a person (watch the 2nd disc, making of the movie). I'm probably one of the few people out there who didn't care for the director's movie FRIENDS, I just never believed that the characters were really friends. But in MUTT BOY all the relationships were so believable! Anyway, don't take my word for it, watch it for yourself... |

Very funny if you understand Korean and Korean cul
|
I can understand why some of the guys here felt the movie wasn't funny. To me, this movie was funny in a sense that the main character captured a "typical" baek-soo (a person who doesn't have any job) really well. The kind of attire that he wears when he is at home and the way he deals with other people are reminiscent of the "baek soo" that I knew when I was in Korea. Also, the original title is supposed to be "Ddong-gae" which literally means a worthless dog, a dog which is not a pure breed...so on. A Ddong-gae eats its own waste and vomit. It doesn't respect its owner. The main character in the movie is perceived by others as "ddong-gae," a worthless dog whereas he is a dear son to his father and a loving brother to his adopted sister. Another noteworthy aspect of this movie is that it is a satire of the "baek-soo" culture in Korea. I heard from news that number of young people (i.e in their 20s) who are unemployed has exceeded 400k. A lot of "baek-soo" in Korea probably can relate to this movie considering the kind of scorn they face from their neighbors and family members over the fact that they are without jobs and have no means to support themselves once they get kicked out from their homes. Funny thing is that the main character is neither discouraged nor depressed over his situation unlike many baek-soo's. In that, this movie is encouraging to many jobless young people in Korea as well as those movie viewers. |

Not very funny
| I saw this in theater when I was in Korea, and I gotta say I was very disappointed in this movie. I had high hope for this movie since it was directed by the same guy who did "Chingu" and "Champion." But it's not good as I thought. It had lame jokes and lack of character development, and the ending feels kinda rushed. Good performance by Jung Woo Sung, but the movie made him downfall. |

Decent movie
|
I got my Mutt Boy aka Strayed doggy LE digipack from Yesasia yesterday. Quick thoughts on it: I had high hopes for this one but i was not very impressed with movie on a whole. It had fine performances and some exceptional acting but it ran a little hot and cold for me. The soundtrack on occasions was not really fitting for the scenes on screen and spoiled more than a few moments. The subs are poor and at times are blink and you will miss em and found myself time after time rewinding frame by frame to find out what was being said. The Starmax digi packaging is decent enough, the outside packaging is very much like the Starmax BR2 Directors cut Sleeve. Not checked out the extras on disc 2 yet. Its not a bad movie by any means and i think my own high expectations were the thing that let the movie down for me the most. |
