My Blueberry Nights (VCD) (Hong Kong Version) VCD
YesAsia Editorial Description
Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai makes his long-awaited English-language debut in 2007 with My Blueberry Nights. Just as he did 13 years ago when he plucked Faye Wong for Chungking Express, Wong Kar Wai casts as his muse an acting newcomer, piano pop ingenue Norah Jones. Bright and brooding, My Blueberry Nights is a moody road movie with the director's signature meandering story, lovelorn characters, and beautiful photography, as well as striking art direction from William Cheung Suk Ping. Jude Law co-stars as Jones's yearning love interest, Rachel Weisz and David Strathairn portray an estranged, feuding couple, and Natalie Portman does some brassy scenery chewing as a professional gambler. More dialogue-driven than Wong's previous films, My Blueberry Nights also moves faster than the usual WKW offering, making it his most accessible, but no less alluring, work to date.
Suddenly faced with her boyfriend's infidelity, Elizabeth (Norah Jones) walks into the local cafe and leaves her boyfriend's apartment keys with owner Jeremy (Jude Law). She comes back regularly to check on the keys, but they remain on Jeremy's shelf, along with all the other unclaimed keys he's collected over the years. Amidst light conversation and blueberry pie, a bond begins to form between the two lovelorn souls, but the blossoming relationship is cut short when Elizabeth leaves New York for a road trip. Working odd jobs as she makes her way across the country, Elizabeth quietly watches and grows through various encounters, while Jeremy waits for her in New York.

Product Information
Director: Wong Kar Wai
剛失戀的伊莉莎白Elizabeth(諾拉鍾斯Norah Jones),決定遠行散心。
After a rough break-up, Elizabeth sets out on a journey across America, leaving behind a life of memories, a dream and a soulful new friend; a cafe owner--all while in search of something to mend her broken heart. Waitressing her way through the country, Elizabeth befriends others whose yearnings are greater than hers, including a troubled cop and his estranged wife and a down-on-her luck gambler with a score to settle. Through these individuals, Elizabeth witnesses the true depths of loneliness and emptiness, and begins to understand that her own journey is part of a greater exploration within herself.

| "My Blueberry Nights" represents Wong Kar Wai at the peak of his craft. Not the stylistic transition I had expected but a translation into another spoken language. Which seems to make little difference, as Mr. Wong speaks a cinematic language that is both all his own and universal. Each slow-mo blur and obstructed frame has as much poetry in it as a line of Shakespeare. Wong motifs abound-- Trains, clocks, diners, female gamblers, policemen, the down on their life and luck and looking for love. Is the similarity of the names Su Li-Zhen and Sue Lynn mere chance? First-time actor Nora Jones (a prospect I winced at when I first read the news) acquits herself with charm and grace and the rest of the cast performs flawlessly, with David Strathairn perhaps being the standout. |

Surprisingly Excellent
| I'm not a Norah Jones fan and was getting this DVD for my ex-wife who is a big fan of Jones. So, I wasn't expecting to like the DVD myself. I was in for a pleasant surprise. There were Oscar-level performances in this film. And, the cinematography and musical score were of Oscar caliber as well. I will no doubt have to borrow it back from my ex from time to time ... or perhaps buy my own copy. This is one film I'll want to watch again and again. |
