A clever premise, but...
"My Boss My Hero" boasts several terrific performances and a seemingly foolproof comic premise, but manages to squander both. Jung Jun Ho plays a mid-level gang boss who is asked to return to high school to obtain his high school degree in order to move up on his criminal organization. When the film sticks to this theme, laughs abound and the movie entertains. But then the troubles begin. First, some of the scenes inexplicably are shot with a jittery handheld camera. This technique typically is employed in action films to give the viewer the sense of being in the middle of the action. Here, however, the technique is used in static scenes in which people are just sitting and talking. The jittery images are a stomach-churning distraction. Strike one. Second, the film has jarring juxtapositions in tone, between comedy, melodrama, and action. In the hands of a skilled director, these tonal shifts might be knitted together into an interesting melange; here, they seem to be at war with each other. Strike two. Finally, the film closes with a fifteen minute long ultraviolent fight that erases the viewers' memory of the comedy and romance that made the film watchable up to that point. Strike three. Jung Jun Ho carries off his complex acting challenge with elan. Song Seon Mi also stands out as the iron-willed hottie high school English teacher. Unfortunately, the filmmakers let them down. |

NICE
Jung Jun Ho plays a hoodlum, he did very well. I like the action...maybe a little too violent when he needs to be beaten because of a girl she loves. Relaxing, but don't expect too much. |

AN EXCELLENT COMEDY THRILLER
This film goes from being screamingly funny one minute to unpleantly violent the next with alarming regularity. Jung Jun Ho is excellent as the baby faced gangster ordered to graduate from high school. There are also some great supporting performances particularly from the lad with a yen for flashing from the roof top opposite the school - he could give Jacky Cheung a run for his money with his crazy performance! |

Not a great movie
Most of the jokes are pretty tame although the premise of sending a gangster boss to graduate from high school is good. It could be due to the translation from Korean to Chinese subtitles, I found the overall story not too funny and the pace a little too slow. The ending turns into a stupid group fight and really hurts the movie. |
