My Cup Of Tea (CD+DVD) DVD Region All
YesAsia Editorial Description
On the music scene for over 20 years, Hacken Lee began his singing career after winning the second Hong Kong district singing contest in 1985. Later he solidified his reputation with such memorable hits as "Won't Ever Change" and "Famous Days". Today he is one of the most respected Canto-pop singers, and his recent symphony-inspired albums, Concert Hall I and Concert Hall II, have sold like hot cakes. Now it's finally time for his latest major album, My Cup of Tea, which presents more ambitious works including 11 new songs, plus 2 bonus tracks. Among the recommended songs are his environmental movement theme song "Where Will The Leaves Fall?" (CD - Track 5/13) and "The Sky's So Blue" (CD - Track 12), the theme for the TVB drama series The Drive of Life, with Steve Chou on guest vocals. The album also features the song "Paper Marriage" (CD - Track 1/11) with violin virtuoso David Garrett. Hacken's fans have a lot of surprises to look forward to with My Cup of Tea.
This edition comes with a DVD containing 3 music videos and 10 multi-audio tracks. Listeners can select different arrangements for the songs, such as string quartet, acoustic guitar, and flute accompaniment.

Professional Review of "My Cup Of Tea (CD+DVD)"
|
In his continuing effort to deviate from overproduced Cantopop, Hacken Lee takes a break from the Concert Hall series for his latest Cantonese album My Cup of Tea. While this album is no longer about recording songs in one take, five-piece ensembles, or concert halls, Hacken's team continues to take the route of naturalistic recording with live instruments. This is further emphasized in the bonus DVD, which allows listeners to break down each song by individual sets of instruments. While the gimmick itself is what it is - a gimmick - My Cup of Tea remains an exceptional Cantopop album because its sound is so different from Cantopop. While there are notably more composers onboard this time, producers C.Y. Kong and Kavin Tsang are still able to create an album with a unified musical tone (the producers are so insistent on this that theme song "The Drive of Life" (Track 11) and one of the remixes are relegated to "bonus tracks" status). And the keyword this time around is "soft." Everything in this album is soft in the sound department, from Hacken's vocals to the use of acoustic instruments (some people might even mistake this for a Chet Lam album). Furthermore, as if Hacken's usual trademark voice isn't soft enough already, he reportedly used several methods to further soften his voice, including sitting down during recording to lessen the use of his diaphragm and recording in the morning when his voice is weaker. This time, he doesn't even have to compete with the musical team, despite the presence of violinist David Garrett and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. That's not to say that the musical aspect of My Cup of Tea is weak, but rather that the lack of the production gimmick means the arrangement no longer has to compete to stand out, allowing for a more balanced album. This is especially true for the tracks dominated by the acoustic guitar. "Father and Son" (Track 2) by Eric Kwok and "Continue Being Single" (Track 3) both use refreshingly quiet acoustic arrangements that match Hacken's vocal choice and the songs' respective subject matters. In fact, the recordings sound so natural that both of these songs could've been recorded under the Concert Hall guideline. Unlike opening track "Paper Marriage" (Track 1), whose melodramatic melody and arrangement sound like it belongs on another album, the two acoustic tracks truly set the light gentle tone the album wants to achieve. Unlike Hacken's past two albums, where the faster songs with irreverent subject matters clashed unnaturally with the elegant tone of the rest of the album, the lack of instrumental limitations this time around allows the producers to fit other genres into the musical tone. While The Invisible Men's "Brazil Women Team" (Track 7) successfully fits into the South American samba genre with a general tone that also injects a bit of life into the proceedings, Hacken's vocal is still too stable and ultimately too safe to suitably fit the song. More successful is C.Y.Kong's "Twins" (Track 6), which can be best described as a waltz in the style of a pop song. Here, Hacken's vocal serves as a deadpan storyteller singing about the close relationship of twin brothers. While its success can also be attributed to better lyrics, the vocal is successful simply because it doesn't feel out of place. In the end, Hacken Lee is first and foremost a pop singer. This means My Cup of Tea is actually filled with Cantopop's favorite genre - ballads. The ballads in the first half - "The Fork" (Track 4) and "Who Will the Flower Go To" (Track 5) - are fairly solid thanks to their melodies. On the other hand, while the three ballads that end the album feature the same solid arrangements and vocals that are in line with the rest of the album, they are ultimately only effective as side tracks because of melodies that fail to be as memorable as the tracks in the first half. Like the album's title suggests, My Cup of Tea really depends on one's preference. If you are looking for a continuation of the Concert Hall series - in other words, an elegant and grand stereo workout - this album doesn't feature the type of climax to satisfy the requirement. On the other hand, if you are looking for a relaxing summer album that is pleasing to the ears and doesn't demand much on the eardrums, then this might be the Hong Kong album of the summer. My theory on the album title is that Hacken has finally found his niche in naturalistic studio recording; whether you choose to follow along fully depends on, pardon the pun, what your cup of tea happens to be. by Kevin Ma |

Select the instrument....
| I am not going to talk about the songs since I am quite ok with them. I would rather talk about the new feature that let you switch by using different music instruments from the DVD disc. They just simply put each of the recorded instrument sound on the DVD without a new solo arrangement. Therefore, you will feel weird when hearing the violin solo or piano solo track. The flow of the music is suddenly stopped. In fact, the sudden drop is suppose to back up by the second melody line played by piano or bass. The whole idea of selecting your favorite music instrument just gets ugly without a total solo arrangement |

"My Cup Of Tea" by Hacken Lee
|
Once again Hacken delivers a classic masterpiece. Well known for clarity and control, he has a voice that is almost technically flawless, capable in rising to heavenly heights and plunging with equal grace the next bar. This recording is nicely crafted in terms of composition and arrangement, with lotsa orchestral/chamber support. After listening to the entire CD, one would experience a cohesive programme that paints a complete story and not songs that are put together just to fill up an album. Had fun trying out the different arrangements on the DVD, vocals with different mixes of instrumentation. Personal favourites are tracks 1, 2, 5, 8, 9 and 12. |

so-so album
| b/c of the big difference in opinion provided by reviewers on this album, i decided to give it a try. after listening to it a number of times, i frankly didn't like it that much...found it kinda boring at times.. i can see it being good relaxation music but i personally like cds with more variety of pace and style of music..and also less filler songs such as that twins and brazilian girl song which were not very good...but im no expert or whatever, thats just my opinion... i think his concert hall 2 cd was better... |
