My Dear Son

YesAsia Editorial Description

Tough, affecting drama highlights My Dear Son, a surprising film starring popular singer Jacky Cheung. Peter Ho (Jacky Cheung) is a low-level employee at a prestigious firm in Central, but he hides a secret from his stodgy bosses. Peter's family is exceptionally poor, and his father (Bill Tung Piu) is actually an infamous street performer who sings off-color songs for donations on the street. Peter manages to progress in his job, and even begins to date his boss' daughter. But when the truth of his background is discovered, Peter is summarily fired. Bitter and angry, Peter joins the triads along with his pal (Sean Lau Ching Wan), and finds new romance with the luminous Maggie Cheung. When given the chance, Peter even uses his new underworld position to threaten his previous boss! But Peter sinks too far into the triad underworld, and soon not even his family can be spared from violence. A harrowing drama that progresses from social critique to triad indictment, My Dear Son runs the full gamut of emotions to deliver a tough and truthful message about the choices we make in life.

Sad movies that makes you think Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
When my friend recommended this movie to me, I didn't know what to expect, but when I finished watching it, it made me think. To be honest, I wish had a dad so selfless, maybe I do and just don't know it. I recommend this movie.

I Be Hard Pressed to Call This Film My Favourite Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This film is about Peter Ho Tin-cheung, a person who has a father whom performs in the markets of Hong Kong, singing offensive "folk" songs, which the audiences, appreciates his performance. Peter succeeded in winning a job position as an office employee in Central (Chung Wan). Every neighbour knows it and congratulates him. Everything goes to plan, and he even got praises from his manager when he thought of a great idea for his manager's business. You have to watch the film to understand what I'm trying to say. He even manages to grab the attention of his Chief Executive Officer's (CEO, I presume) sister and fell in love with her. They met in a nightclub, with Peter's manager and CEO present. But everything becomes bad all of a sudden, after when the younger siblings (Peter's younger brother and sister) mention to the CEO, that they give public performances in the markets and Peters' younger brother sung a few notes, and that's when Peter's boss gets suspicious and becomes angry (his face shows it). That was during the night at their local nightclub, when they celebrated Peter's birthday. So he asked his sister to see Peter's father performing in the markets, to disclose Peter's real background, as a poor person with a father being the struggling busker in the markets. So that's when the trouble starts. The CEO detests them being together, also including Peter's manager, saying that it will harm the company's professional image. The manager gave Peter a one and only warning, that he is to not be romantically become involved with the CEO's sister, or he will be dismissed from the job immediately. The CEO's sister invited him to come to her place, and that's when the CEO came home, (about the same time), and he saw that Peter is at his house and is furious. The next day, he recieved a letter saying that he's dimissed from the job. One day, in some coincidence, Peter and his triad friend were in a nightclub when the CEO and his men were in the club celebrating. So, they followed him to the toilet (when the manager was absolutely "pissed" with alcohol), and Peter gives his former boss a threatening look, "pretending" that he will punch him, and the CEO is on his knees, begging and telling him that he can have his job back, raise him to the position of supervisor, then position of manager, CEO. Then he left him alone, once Peter's triad friend let's the CEO's men come in. Then one day, Peter joins the triad society and that's when the real trouble begins, which will involve his family and friends.... No, I'm not going to tell you the remaining half of the story, you have to watch it for yourself. But one thing I can tell you: You will either like the film or hate the film, but you won't say it's an excellent film. But it is a film with a message for the audience to learn, but you have the find the message towards the very end of the film. Jacky Cheung and the cast gives an excellent performance. This film was probably made in very late 1988 (they probably begun shooting this film in early December, 1988), when Jacky's career hit rock bottom. This film was released in 1989. I'm glad it's Wong Kar-wai's 1988 film, "As Tears Go By" that revived Jacky's career. I'm so happy that this film has been produced onto VCD, because, I saw a short clip from the film, from a story about Jacky's career which was shown on TVB's "Sunday Files" ("Xingqiri Dangan") program in 1993, and I always been asking the CD/VCD/DVD retailers whether they have heard of this film and has been released onto VCD and or DVD. I asked them since MARCH this year, but it only took until last week or so for this VCD to be released, FINALLY. I'm extremely happy for the film's VCD release. I hope there will be more Jacky Cheung films to be produced onto VCD/DVD in the very near future.
