YesAsia Editorial Description
After charming audiences with the "Focus: First Cuts" entry The Shoe Fairy, up-and-coming Taiwanese filmmaker Robin Lee takes another quirky look at modern romance with My DNA Says I Love You. This amusingly titled romantic comedy explores the idea of curing problematic genes that might be obstacles in love. The humorous, yet oddly insightful film features the photogenic casting of Mainland newcomer Yu Nan from the acclaimed film Tuya's Marriage and Taiwanese actress Terri Kwan (The Heirloom, Toast Boy's Kiss 2), opposite television heartthrobs Peter Ho (Starry Starry Night, The Truth About Jane and Sam) and Eddie Peng (When Dolphin Met Cat, Exit No. 6), who received a Best New Performer nomination at the 44th Golden Horse Awards for his performance.
Colleagues at a bio-tech company, neat freak Gigi (Terri Kwan) and naturally plump Marlene (Yu Nan) were both born with genes that cause problems in their love life. When Gigi runs into her college boyfriend Anteater (Peter Ho), she strikes up a new relationship with him, unable to recall why they broke up in the first place. Everything is going great until the day she steps foot in his incredibly messy apartment, and her neat-freak genes act up. Not wanting to lose love again, Gigi starts taking the "anti clean-gene" pill and happily moves in with Anteater. Marlene is also on cloud nine thanks to the "anti fat-gene pill" and her blooming romance with next-door neighbor Teddy (Eddie Peng). But what happens when the pills get pulled off the market?

In "My DNA Says I Love You", roommates Marlene (Yu Nan) and Gigi (Terri Kwan) both work for a biopharmaceuticals company in tropical Xiamen. Biologist Marlene develops pills to counteract a gene that makes people prone to being fat. In her free time, she pines for her boyfriend who always is out of the country on business trips. He professes to love her, but never takes time to visit her. Her landlord's son Teddy (Eddie Peng) yearns for miserable Marlene, but her heart remains stuck on her absent boyfriend. Neat freak saleswoman Gigi ruins every relationship she enters because she can't abide other people's messes. When she meets her old college beau Anteater (Peter Ho), she believes she finally has found her match, until she visits his filthy home. When Gigi learns that her company is developing a drug that counteracts neat freak tendencies, she steals a batch of them and begins to take them, although she has been warned that they have serious side effects. Soon she needs to take other pills to counteract those side effects, then yet more pills to counteract the side effects of the second batch of pills, etc. Marlene and Gigi's apartment then becomes infested with runaway, ever-morphing slime molds and the roomies, together with Anteater and Teddy, must don hazmat suits to clean it up, but then Marlene and Gigi become infected by the mold. Can they be saved? The main problem with "My DNA Says I Love You" should be obvious from this description: Its parts simply don't fit together. You have a mopey romantic melodrama involving Marlene, a goofy romantic comedy featuring Gigi that abruptly turns into an addiction melodrama, and a silly sci-fi subplot about slime molds. The only part of the film that really works is the romantic comedy; Terry Kwan both charms and horrifies with her obsessive yet sexy saleswoman and she develops some delightful chemistry with Peter Ho. The rest of the film, unfortunately, is glossy dross. |
