YesAsia Editorial Description

Patrick Tam's classic heroic bloodshed action-romance My Heart Is That Eternal Rose is finally arriving on DVD!

Before he won multiple Best Director awards for After This, Our Exile, Patrick Tam helmed the 1989 film My Heart Is That Eternal Rose. Headlined by Kenny Bee (Shanghai Blues) and Joey Wang (A Chinese Ghost Story), the film further demonstrates Tam's ability to handle multiple genres with appreciable artistry. Essentially a pulpy romance, My Heart Is That Eternal Rose features plenty of iconography from Hong Kong's storied heroic bloodshed genre. Artful romanticism combined with menacing gangsters, honorable hitmen, and a healthy helping of blood and bullets help make My Heart Is That Eternal Rose a classic Hong Kong film in the truest sense of the word. Tony Leung Chiu Wai co-stars in an award-winning supporting performance, and regular Wong Kar Wai collaborator Christopher Doyle handles the cinematography.

Rick (Kenny Bee) and Lap (Joey Wang) are star-crossed lovers whose initial romance is torn apart by the murder of a cop (Ng Man Tat), involving both Rick and her father (Kwan Hoi San). Years later, Rick and Lap meet once more, but circumstances have changed. Rick is now a suave hitman for hire, while Lap is the girlfriend of powerful crime boss Shen (Chan Wai Man). The years and distance have taken their toll on the lovers, but their passion still burns, drawing the two back together. Their treachery does not escape the notice of Shen, nor Shen's right-hand man, played by Shaw Brothers legend Gordon Liu. Rick and Lap's only ally may be Cheung (Tony Leung Chiu Wai), a mousy triad who carries his own torch for Lap. With few options left to the lovers, and with Shen in hot pursuit, the stage is set for a violent, blood-drenched finale.

Professional Review of "My Heart Is That Eternal Rose (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)"

November 12, 2007

Director Patrick Tam was out of the game for so long prior to the release of After This Our Exile that for many his was a recognition based on reputation only, with most fans never having had the chance to see his earlier work, a situation now remedied with the release of his earlier heroic bloodshed film My Heart Is That Eternal Rose.

For those who came to director Patrick Tam only lately through the quiet drama of After This Our Exile, My Heart Is That Eternal Rose will come as something of a surprise. Lensed by legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle, Eternal Rose is a classic Hong Kong heroic bloodshed film. The raspy voiced Kenny Bee plays Rick, a strictly small time hustler in love with the beautiful Lap. Rick is blind to everything but the object of his desire and when her gangster turned bar owner father is pressured into one last job - smuggling a mainland crime boss' son into Hong Kong - Rick happily agrees to drive as a way of winning favor with the old man. But things go horribly wrong. The crime lord's son is killed, Lap's father is kidnapped and certain to be tortured then slain, and Rick is forced to flee to the Philippines to save his own life. For her part, Lap sells herself to another crime boss in exchange for his intervention to save her father and is forced to live a life as a gangster's woman. Six years later, Cheung (Tony Leung) is working as Lap's driver and obviously in love with her when Rick returns to Hong Kong as a professional hitman determined to take his woman back. If you have any knowledge of Hong Kong film at all you know that there's only one way that this can end.

Tam's film features beautiful cinematography and classic hard edged action, all of it anchored by his sterling cast. The Shaw Brothers icon in this case is Gordon Liu playing a loutish gang lieutenant and obviously relishing the chance to play so far against type. The convoluted plot and high melodrama are par for the course with Hong Kong actioners of this vintage but Tam has such a sure grasp of his characters that it all works remarkably well. While the action never reaches the extreme highs that John Woo drove the heroic bloodshed genre to - arguably killing it in the process since there was simply nowhere left to go by the time Woo was done - what is there is very well executed and designed to further the dramatic elements. On the whole it's a very classy, very solid addition to the genre and one that hasn't received nearly the level of attention it deserves.

The DVD release features anamorphic widescreen transfers and reasonable English subtitles. The transfer is fresh and the transfer itself is of good quality but, unfortunately, the print is a bit aged and battered so while the transfer is good there is some damage visible on the print. The disc is formatted for all regions and so is playable anywhere in the world with no specialized hardware or software required.

what sacrifice - love?? Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
2 teenagers in love, Joey and Kenny, were caught in an unpredictable situation when Joey's father was killed carrying out one last 'job' under protest (he was ex-triad) and her own safety on the line. Kenny had to go 'underground' in the Philippines and to save herself from a triad-boss seeking revenge for his son's death, she seek the protection of one of her father's ex-partner-in-crime, played by Ng., and eventually becoming his mistress. Gordon had the unsavoury role of being Ng's chief pimp and killed towards the end of the plot. No kungfu demos here!!

This separation of the lovers took a turn when Kenny became an assassin hired by Ng. The lovers became united by chance and realised they have to escape to survive. A very young Tony played Ng's chauffeur. Still a greenhorn, he secretly admires Joey and promised to help her escape, much to the outrage of Ng. Unfortunately, the lovers could only reunite in death and the one person who was willing to sacrifice himself get to live.
