YesAsia Editorial Description
Screened at the 9th Jeonju International Film Festival 2008 and the CNEX Documentary Film Festival 2007, My Last Secret may just be one of the best documentaries ever to come from Mainland China. Directors Li Xiaofeng and Jia Kai took seven years to make this personal documentary following a graceful old lady in her nineties and her uneducated caretaker in her sixties, who lived together on an old street in Suzhou. Through the film, we witness how their relationship changes from a somewhat antagonistic one to one with mutual trust and dependence. The old lady, born in a prestigious family in Shanghai, was an athletic star at school, and later eloped with her lover. Her husband eventually died and left her reminiscing about her youthful days and her late lover. The childless old lady wrote a will that her savings would be donated to the local university for a scholarship. She regards the will as her last secret, one that everyone else knows but can't quite understand.
