Diva-dom could be beckoning
2009 was a fruitful year for alan. The latest Chinese import in J-pop unveiled her debut Japanese album Voice of EARTH in March, then the Mandarin album "Orient of the Heart" (essentially a remake of Voice of EARTH) in July, and finally her second Japanese album my life in November. She also scheduled dates for her first solo concert tour in Japan - which she is holding right now - and we'll see what this year would bring for this exciting singer.

No longer a newbie, but not quite there yet on the J-pop scene, alan is in a tricky phase of her career. People have seen what she could do, and will naturally want to see more from her. In that regard, it would seem necessary that she take a certain extent of risks, a new direction in her new album. Unlike Voice of EARTH, which is packed with songs tailor-made for her unique ethnic characteristics, my life shows signs that the Tibetan Chinese songstress is steering towards the mainstream, a move that's probably necessary to migrate beyond her niche status.

my life shows a willingness to make new attempts, though not necessarily successful ones. There are the familiar sounds, such as the epic anthem Kuon no Kawa and the hauntingly beautiful BALLAD ~Namonaki Koi no Uta~, that have endeared her to a growing fanbase. Then there is an electronic sound that's featured heavily throughout the album, as embodied in the appetizing track reflection ~overture~.

The real album opener, alan's 11th single Swear is a fresh and upbeat J-pop standard that is a rare thing for her (the video, by the way, is simply adorable). The jazzy update to the formerly B-side number Namida doesn't sound as powerful here as in its original shape, but her attempts in R&B (Lost Child) and disco (Call my name) are nothing but delightful treats. A dance-oriented album next time, anyone? It must also be mentioned that alan employs some totally awesome falsetto technique on several tracks, and that complements her signature high-pitch vocals very well.

Another big plus is that alan is also developing her songwriting skills, co-writing five songs with producer Kikuchi Kazuhito. Among these compositions, the highlight is easily the poignant, piano-driven tune Nobody knows but me. But the true deal-maker for my life has got to be the mind-blowing masterpiece title track, the perfect closer for an album that not only brings out the best of the singer but also unlocks her tremendous potential.

Not what I expected..... Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I have been a Alan fan since I heard her utterly amazingly first album Voice of Earth. Alan was a truely out-of-the-world singer as she added tradtional Tibetan instruments and the awesome power of her Tibetan wail to classic j-pop tracks (classic example track 9 Navy Blue Valley). I was sooooo excited to get my hands on her new stuff but unfortunately the things I loved about Alan, the elements that made her stand out are somewhat lacking on this album. Gone are the subtle influences of her Tibetan heritage...I think she only briefly wails on two songs...and in come more 'normal' J-Pop ballads. Now to be fair Alan still has one incredible voice and the songs are pleasent and relaxing but the quality of the songs don't stand out in the same way that they did on her first album. Having said that there is one song that makes the whole album a must buy .... Nobody Knows But Me. This is a stunning song, really emotional, and it is the main reason why you should get this CD.
This version also comes with music video, all of which are very sweet and typically alan (a big focus on nature) . A particulary good one is for Swear .... its very clever, but you will have to watch it to see why.
All in all if you are new to Alan start with getting Voice of Earth. If you loved Voice of Earth you should get this album, if you weren't too impressed with Voice of Earth then you probably won't get much enjoyment out of this one!!!! For big fans only!!!!
