YesAsia Editorial Description

Winner of the 2005 Baeksang Awards Grand Prize for TV Drama.

She's 29 years old, single, and overweight. She doesn't have a college degree, a boyfriend, or a job. She's outspoken, obstinate, and fed up with society's expectations of her. Her name is Kim Sam Soon, and she's Korea's unlikely sweetheart!

Thanks to its everywoman protagonist, My Lovely Sam Soon (a.k.a. My Name is Kim Sam Soon) has been billed as Korea's answer to Bridget Jones. Kim Sam Soon (Kim Sun Ah, who gained 15 pounds for the role) is a Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef who doesn't conform to the stereotype of the typical K-Drama Cinderella. Sam Soon won't let men push her around, will eat and sleep her way out of a depression, and could care less how other people see her.

When Sam-Soon loses her job on Christmas Eve, her problems are just beginning. She spots her boyfriend going into a hotel with another woman. At first she wants to charge right in there and confront him, but instead decides to wait for him to come out. She plans on dumping him in front of everybody, but when he finally does materialize, Sam-Soon breaks down and begs him not to leave her for the other woman.

Realizing she has made a fool of herself in public she runs to the bathroom, but accidentally goes into the men's room. Hyun Jin Hun (Hyun Bin), on a blind date he has no desire to go through with, walks in on Sam-Soon, embarrassing her even more! But Jin-Hun turns out to be Sam Soon's future employer - in more ways than one. He's a rich restaurant owner who hires Sam Soon, not only to be a chef, but also to be his pretend girlfriend! So begins a series of surprising and touching events that would try the emotions of any normal woman. But this is no normal woman - this is Kim Sam Soon!

Professional Review of "My Lovely Sam Soon (DVD) (End) (4-Disc Deluxe Edition) (Multi-audio) (MBC TV Drama) (Taiwan Version)"

February 2, 2007

This professional review refers to My Lovely Sam-Soon (English Subtitled)(MBC TV Series)(US Version)
If you absolutely must watch a soap opera, what kind of protagonist would you prefer? An angelic, beautiful, and wholly unrealistic do-gooder, or someone who's a little rougher around the edges? If the latter is your preference, then you'll be very pleased with the K-drama phenomenon My Lovely Sam Soon. The show's title character is a refreshing departure from the types of heroines traditionally depicted in Korean television drama. Rather than subject viewers to another gorgeous, and thus, inaccessible Cinderella-type waiting for her Prince Charming, the people behind My Lovely Sam Soon have instead given audiences a character they can relate to - everywoman Kim Sam Soon.

Actress Kim Seon Ah gained fifteen pounds to play the role of the mouthy, plain looking, and slightly overweight (read: normal!) pastry chef who just so happens to be pushing thirty. She comes from a lower class background and doesn't have a college degree, but she doesn't let other people's prejudices get in the way of her dreams and goals. The only thing that she really has a problem with is her name, which she hopes to legally change to "Kim Hee Jin" if her mother will allow it.

After losing both her job and her boyfriend on Christmas Eve, Sam Soon finds herself crossing paths with Hyeon Jin Heon (Hyeon Bin), the twenty-seven year old owner of the French restaurant, Bon Appetit. Of course, the two immediately despise each other, but a confluence of events impels Jin Heon to hire Sam Soon as his pastry chef. Sam Soon is initially hesitant to work for Jin Heon, but realizing she needs the money, our heroine decides to accept the position. Her only condition is to be called "Kim Hee Jin," a request which inexplicably upsets Jin Heon, but after some consideration, he goes along with her demands. Then, in a move that could only happen in a soap opera, Jin Heon hires Sam Soon to pose as his girlfriend so his meddling mother will stop setting him up on blind dates. Can you see how this is going to get a little complicated?

But that's not even the half of it. It seems there's more to Jin Heon than meets the eye. Apparently, there's some tragedy in his past that left him with an injured leg, killed off his brother and sister-in-law, and left his cute-as-a-button niece Mi Joo (Seo Ji Hee) completely speechless for three years. Even worse, in the aftermath of this mysterious event, Jin Heon's longtime girlfriend (Jeong Ryeo Won) left for America with no explanation. And wouldn't you know it? Just as Sam Soon begins to develop feelings for her prickly boss, Jin Heon's ex re-enters the picture. Her name? Yoo Hee Jin. What are her intentions toward Jin Heon? And what about the handsome Dr. Henry Kim (Daniel Henney), who's arriving from America just to see her? Not surprisingly, more misunderstandings than a season-full of Three's Company episodes ensue with plenty of humorous and not-so-humorous results.

To say any more about the story would not only spoil the fun, but also require a discussion too large for the space provided. My Lovely Sam Soon is a soap opera after all, so while the plot points divulged here may seem numerous, it's only the tip of the iceberg in this complications-aplenty K-Drama. Kim Seon Ah is the heart and soul of the series, and does a fine job in her role as Sam Soon. Her character's straight-talking, take-no-crap persona is a joy to watch, and makes for many highly comical situations. Her character's propensity to daydream often takes the show in a different direction. Whether it's Kim Seon Ah humorously channeling Michelle Pfieffer in The Fabulous Baker Boys or just imagining what she (and the audience) would like to do in a given situation, these little digressions are highly welcome moments. Her co-star Hyeon Bin does what he can with a character who isn't very likeable. For the purposes of the plot, it seems Jin Heon is supposed to be an infuriating jerk. But perhaps that's something viewers of K-dramas like to see, that is - watching someone like Sam Soon melt this guy's icy exterior. Whatever the case, thankfully, once the show gives Jin Heon some leeway to actually lighten up during the latter half of the series, he becomes an infinitely more interesting character.

The other "couple" in the series work as interesting foils for the main characters. No doubt in an effort to contrast sharply with the "overweight" Sam Soon, the actress portraying Hee Jin is rail thin, which itself becomes a plot point as the story develops. Jeong Ryeo Won plays the "other woman," but her character seems to act purely on the whims of the screenwriters – one moment she's the sweetest girl in the world, and the next, she's a conniving shrew. Interestingly enough, although she has good chemistry with Hyeon Bin, she has even more with co-star Daniel Henney. Since his character cannot speak Korean, she communicates with him in Australian-accented English (which isn't explained, by the way). Of course, it would make sense for these two to pair off immediately, but who says soap operas make any sense? In any case, the biggest surprise of the series is acting newcomer Henney. Although his English-only line readings occasionally come across a little stilted, the model-turned-actor delivers a performance that is surprisingly naturalistic at times. Along with the "bull in a china shop" nature of Kim Sam Soon, the directness of Henney's character helps puncture the often overstuffed melodrama that tends to accumulate as the series goes on. It's a shame the writers didn't devise more scenes for Kim Seon Ah and Daniel Henney to play off one another, as their few interactions in the series make for definite comedy gold.

Despite its positive strides with its lead character, My Lovely Sam Soon isn't without its problems. Whether it's the numerous scenes of people breaking down in histrionics, the occasionally moronic motivations of certain characters, or the heavy reliance on an Idiot Plot that could be easily resolved with a five minute conversation or even a ten second outburst, it's clear that the show does occasionally lapse into the contrivances of the soap opera world. I mean, just how many scenes do we have to watch of Jin Heon upsetting Sam Soon, only to have him chase after her to apologize? But to its credit, the show's creators expertly test the patience of the viewer. Just when you think the show is going to milk a particular problem for the length of the entire series, the issue is quickly resolved. Of course, it's not done without raising a new problem, thus hooking the viewer once again.

And the show is rather addictive. My Lovely Sam Soon definitely transcends borders. Although issues of class, weight, age, and marital status matter in just about every culture, the "in-your-face" way in which it is dealt with in My Lovely Sam Soon will be an eye-opener for many viewers. Thankfully, the viewers have the ballsy Kim Sam Soon to cheer for as she strikes back with her sharp tongue and acid wit. Considering its unconventionally charming lead character, it's no wonder that the show became the most watched drama of 2005. Thanks to its comic sensibilities and strong performances from its cast, My Lovely Sam Soon is one K-Drama well-deserving of praise.

This professional review refers to My Lovely Sam-Soon Gift Set
Whether you're from the West or the East, most people are familiar with the entertainment medium known as the Soap Opera. It's a world where anyone and everyone can be connected in some way, from the main hero to the dog crossing the road in the third episode. Such TV Dramas can usually be cliché-a-plenty and have enough cheese for a week's worth of lunches but this, however, proves not to be the case for My Lovely Sam-Soon (a.k.a. My Name is Kim Sam-Soon) which attempts to defy convention and cliché-ridden stereotypes, resulting in a rather original and entertaining drama series. It's also important to note that it was the highest rating TV drama in Korea in 2005.

For starters, the character of Kim Sam-Soon, played by Kim Sun A (S Diary), is a successful evolution of the "Sassy Girl" archetype: fiery, independent, occasionally foul-mouthed and foul-tempered and could drink most guys under the table. But while My Sassy Girl's protagonist carried the more traditional "thin and beautiful" portrait of Asian femininity with long silky-straight black hair, Kim Sam-Soon is potentially the more modern interpretation of the "girl next door" ? gracelessly average with a not-so-thin figure who can't dance, sing or play piano.

The series opens very strongly, with crucial story establishment occurring within the first three episodes, and the last major character introduced by Episode 5. The pace and suspense are well metered - the first few episodes really draw you in and by the time the incredible 7th & 8th episodes come around, you're hooked for the rest of the series. Initially, some of the plot establishment might ring a little familiar ? the contract relationship echoing some of My Tutor Friend, and the "drag the drunk girl home" routine is straight out of My Sassy Girl ? but the rest of the plot and character development is quite clever and executed well. Towards the end, the story does begin to feel a little stretched across the 16 episode span, but it still feels well worthwhile. A mention should also go to the music, which was scored well and appropriately. The main theme song "Be My Love" is pretty toe tapping too.

While the story overall is quite simple, the characters are colorfully illustrated and well acted. One of the more interesting characters was Kim Sam-Soon's recently divorced sister (Lee Ah Hyun) whose thin diet-conscious character seemed to initially serve to highlight Sam-Soon's prosaic chubby persona, but later her revealed attitudes towards sex proved to be an interesting contrast to that of traditional Korean values. While her character was quite interesting, her side story was unfortunately bland and didn't really go anywhere, which was a pity. The introduction of Korean/American Henry Kim (played by Michigan native Daniel Henney) was an anticipated eye-roller with his pearly whites and dashing good looks, but he quickly turned out to be one of the most interesting characters in the series. His was the tragic perseverance of unrequited love, something most audiences can relate to, which was carried out with sincerity and thoughtfully lacking any foreign stereotyping. His character also fitted well into his own side story, which was crucial to the functioning of the main plot elements, making his role a highlight in the series.

My Lovely Sam-Soon is a romantic drama with a sprinkling of comedy. It's a refreshing story about ordinary people living their everyday lives with enough quirkiness and originality to keep you glued to that couch.

There is something wrong with me Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
I have had this series for about 3 years now. I did not like it when I saw it the first time. I took it out and watch it all afternoon
today and still did not like it. I have not smiled or laughed once. Big difference between this show and the Bridget Jones
diary. I get so sick and tired of the two main character arguing. The only fun part was when the main male character told the
main female character that he would not be interested in her because she peed on him when drunk.

Since so many people like this show and one of my family members thinks it is hilarious, I can only assumed there is something wrong with me.

My First Addiction to K- Dramas Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Humans,
After being bored with my crazy era of watching western movies, I decided to take a new route to other cultures that weren’t mine (Nigerian) and ended up in S. Korea... This was the 1st K-Drama I picked and decided to watch. It was a Mandarin version so the English subtitles sucked but overall translation said it was definitely something I could relate to! By the 1st episode I was hooked, and at the end of the piece I had all my sisters hooked. As some summaries state… similar to Bridget Jones’s diary (she’s my heroine) only difference is that it was longer and had more laughs.
I just got it, cannot wait till I finish classes to watch it again… I hope you enjoyed it like I did and it’s a great buy… though $60 is still painful for a college student!

A hidden treasure Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I have heard so much about this drama and finally purchased it. Other dramas I've heard about were not to my liking once I finally watched them, but this one was surprising. There was alot of chemistry between Samsoon and Jin Heon. At first I thought okay there is no way they are going to put them together but to my surprise they work very well together and the series flowed fast. I was mad when it ended. It was one of the best ones I've seen so far. If your in doubt rent this or buy it. It's a great investment. The soundtrack is amazing.

Big Fat Thumbs Up Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Easily the best Korean drama I have watched! Kim Sun Ah is so witty and charming in this, Hyun Bin is infuriatingly handsome as is Daniel Henney...loaded with eye candy ;)...and even Jung Ryeo Won - as much as you would want to hate her character, you can't help but like her as well! An exceptionally funny drama, which breaks all the conventions of your typical cutie female lead! Samsoon is definitely a heart warming!!

please re-release a US version Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
i wish yesasia would be able to release a US version again of my lovely sam soon. my friend actually has this (my lovely sam soon) hk version, and there were quite a few grammar and spelling lapses. so it is really incumbent on the viewers to sometimes just get the gist/thought/idea of what the actors are talking about. as an avid korean drama series collector, it is very important to have an excellent english subtitles on these drama series dvds, especially for non-korean and/or non-chinese speaker viewers. i really put high premium on how great the english subtitles are well constructed. i hope that yesasia could release a US version soon!!!!! thank you.
