My Neighbor Totoro is a deceptively simple tale. It is the story of a father and his two young daughters moving to the country and adventures the two girls, Mei and Satsuki, have with the forest spirits they find there. This simplicity makes My Neighbor Totoro one of the purest examples of Myazaki and Studio Ghibli's themes and preoccupations. There is the pleasure in discovery of the delights of rural life (Kiki's Delivery Service) and the interaction between humans and spirits (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away). As with all Ghibli creations, the characters of Mei and Satsuki are beautifully realised. Both have distinct character traits that reflect both their age and personalities. Their conflict is not on a widescreen Lord of the Rings scale but deals with coping with their mother's illness. One of the most powerful moments is not a clash of massive CG armies but the arrival of a telegram informing them that their mother is too ill to return home. Mei and Satsuki's encounters with the forest spirits is also reflection of their perceptions. Unlike the enraged wolf spirits of Mononoke, Totoro and co are warm, friendly and welcoming. Their behaviour is benevolent, coming to aid the sisters in their times of need. All the elements in My Neighbor Totoro are presented with a fine sense of craftsmanship creating a simple tale with great emotional depth. Miyazaki's visualisations of the forest spirits are superb and because of the strength of his characters he can effortlessly blend elements that are both familiar and fantastic. So unforgettable are these scenes that they become embedded in your memory: Mei's encounter with the sleeping Totoro, Mei and Satsuki waiting for their father's bus on a dark and rainy night. My Neighbor Totoro is yet another outstanding Studio Ghibli creation and for a film made in 1988, it is still fresh and vibrant as the day a human hand applied paint to each individual animation cel. 9 soot sprites out of 10 by Andrew Symons - heroic-cinema.com |

| My Neighbor Totoro takes viewers on another ride into a world where fantasy never sleeps. The magical elements of storytelling wizard Miyazaki Hayao take the upper hand again in his classic anime My Neighbor Totoro, primarily revolving around the adventures of Kusakabe Satsuki, her younger sister Mei, and their family in rural Japan. Totoro is a mammoth chinchilla-like creature among whose favorite pastimes are sleeping and traveling around in the unique Cat Bus which takes him to wherever he likes. Harmless in spite of his gigantic proportions, Totoro and his family and friends are not only rare sights to observe, but are also very useful to have around as the protagonists of this anime classic find out to their delight. Once again Miyazaki's movie pays much attention to the fine details especially with respect to human behavior, gestures, and expressions. This is well reflected in the bashful behavior of Satsuki's male classmate and neighbor Ogaki Kanta and the curiosity of Mei when inspecting things during a stroll outside the house. As far as the creative and funny aspects of this work are concerned, some of my favorite scenes are those in which the Cat Bus is shown in action racing through hills and valleys and even over electricity poles. Viewers who pay close attention may also get a glimpse of two pairs of original indicators operated by mice located in the front and back of this unusual bus. In conclusion, this reviewer can only warm-heartedly recommend Miyazaki's by now over two-decade-old milestone anime. It skillfully blends the natural beauty of Japan's countryside with a harmonic music score by adept composer Hisaishi Joe to offer an amusing and touching audio-visual feast for young and old viewers alike. |

VCD Quality GOOD but....

THis VCSD has redubbed new version for Cantonese and it is not the original version, the old cantonese version is so much better but i dont think is has release on VCD or DVD. ive Watched this on VHS when i was little, so much memory! but i do hope they release the old version of cantonese because the characters just reminded me their lovely and funy quotes. the new version isnt as good and they've changed some of the lines which is disapointing me. i do find the little girl isnt as much character since they redubbed. apart from the dubbed, they've remastered the picture, colour is much brighter. i give 6/10. |

Yet a simple movie, the story is very endearing and it captured my heart. The characters are fun and interesting and the music in the movie sounds so sweet and magical. I enjoy watching all of Miyazaki's movies, but this one is definitely my favorite! |
