Compelling tale of the refugee experience
|
"My Rice Noodle Shop" is a moving tale of the refugee experience. Carol Cheng stars as Rong Zhang, the proprietor of a small, down-market noodle shop in Taipei. Both she and most of her customers were forced to flee their homes in Guilin after the Communist takeover of mainland China. Rong yearns for the great noodle restaurant her father operated in Guilin, the best restaurant in that town, and for her husband, a dashing Kuomintang army officer who was killed in the civil war. Her customers include the former mayor of Guilin, forced to leave his three lovely wives behind and now consigned to a low-level paper-pushing job in Taipei, the former largest landowner of Guilin now an impoverished old man ignored by his son, and handsome teacher Lu who pines for the fiancee he still hopes to fetch from Guilin. (Zhou Xun, in a small role, plays that fiancee.) The central theme of "My Rice Noodle Shop" is about how these emigrees must come to grips with the fact that what they left behind can never be recaptured and how that reality affects these troubled souls. The movie clearly is a low budget production with rudimentary cinematography and canned background music, but the emotional power of the story sweeps the viewer along to its melodramatic yet believable conclusion. Carol Cheng delivers a particularly powerful performance. I recommend "My Rice Noodle Shop" highly. |
