There's no easy way to start this, so I've just gotta blurt it out: this is a great movie. The characters are fresh and engaging, the plot is simple yet manages to surprise, and the whole is just superbly well-crafted. It's long, but well worth it: there's a bit of sag in the middle, but otherwise it's a goer from beginning to end. Now it gets even harder: why is it so great? Well, the actors handle their roles with verve and energy and, dare I say it, sass, and the writer/director must take some credit, for producing the snappy pace and quirky situations. The initial sketching of the characters is done in very broad strokes, and gives us a hero and heroine who are interesting and clearly at odds. The hero, likeable but perhaps a tad shallow in his preference for quiet, pretty girly girls, doesn't look like a suitable match for anyone with any depth, and we're caught early on thinking this might be a predictable adventure. Not so, once we meet the heroine: we find her on the train, pissed as a newt (a marvellous phrase from my youth that I'm determined to resurrect), and not exactly presenting at her best. She's even less appealing when she throws up and calls our hero ""Honey"" before passing out, since this leads to the passengers assuming he is her boyfriend, and demanding that he clean up. Ick. Double ick. But we soon see another side to both characters as a result: he cleans up and carries her about town rather than abandon her, and she shows a hint of the sadness that drives her to be such a pain. He even takes her to a love hotel, and stays with her, but doesn't attempt to molest her in her sleep (luckily, or I'd have stopped watching right there). After that, the rest of the film consists mostly of our hero being dragged around Seoul, abused, misused, and humiliated, but ever more determined to delve to the heart of this perplexing girl. From a female point of view, and a fairly fractious female at that, it's nice to see the girl getting to call the shots. I particularly liked seeing her make the hero wear her high-heel shoes all the way home when her feet hurt: instead of letting him carry her, she makes him realise just how uncomfortable heels can be. It takes the wind out of the whole "rescuing hero" image, where the strong man helps the fragile girly without actually having to empathise. I could wiffle on forever, but I won't. All I'll say is that, if you like romantic comedies, this is an absolute stunner, and if you don't, it's still an absolute stunner. See it for the laughs, see it for the love, or see it for the turning upside down of gender stereotypes, but just see it. 9.5 noodle dinners out of 10 by Alison Jobling - heroic-cinema.com |

With a fruitful plot and many unforgettable moments, My Sassy Girl is definitely the best Korean film made in 2001. It is a film that requires multiple viewings. The more you see, the more fun you can retrieve from it. The story of this film is adapted from a Korean novel published on the internet. The plotline is quite simple and direct indeed. Cha Tae-Hyun plays a benevolent college student who has a strange encounter with the drunken Jeon Ji-Hyun. They soon become friends. Because of Jeon's unique personality, they have a hard time getting together. Later, Cha discovers that... After reading this brief synopsis, you may wonder what is so special about this story. Why is this film so great? At first glance, the story may really look typical, but the director was wise enough to turn banal subject into good drama. Surprise keeps popping up since every scene is handled creatively and every dialogue is built up brilliantly. For instance, the arrangement of Cha and Jeon's first "date" in the motel is a courageous and innovative idea. What is cool about it is that, contrary to the typical assumption that motel must be connected to sex, this scene does not imply any sexual meaning at all, yet it is still very funny and surprising. Other scenes like the kidnapping at the theme park, delivery of flower in the lecture hall, or even the soft conversation under the tree are all remarkable. The story keeps you refreshed by bringing you unexpected moments again and again. Without doubt this film is a comedy, the jokes and the performance of the actors are excellent, yet the romantic part is also impressive. Considering that it is a light-hearted comedy, the sincere conversation of Jeon Ji-Hyun at the end is much more susceptible than I expected. The romance is depicted more faithful and passionate than many pure romance films. Apart from love and humors, this film also contains certain sci-fi elements. As the director admitted, UFO does appear in the film once, so as the man from the future. These elements may not affect the major plot of the story, but it increases the rewatch value of the film to a certain extent. If you didn't know about all this bonus materials before, it is time to rewatch it again! Talking about the cast, both Cha Tae-Hyun and Jeon Ji-Hyun have done a splendid job. As we all know, both of them are new actors, but they were able to humanize their characters and make them look appealing. They also succeeded in commanding the emotions of the audience at will. My Sassy Girl is a well constructed work. It is easy to make a conclusion for this review - go watch it! If you have missed the theatrical release, it's time to get the DVD now! Believe it or not, I just finished watching this film for the first time. It was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING from start to finish. It was SO original and creative. The acting of all characters was superb. They all did an amazing job at playing their parts. The plot's really well thought out as well. It was both real funny and real touching as well with some nice twists I won't spoil. It's really different from any other movie I HAVE EVER SEEN. I only wish I had of purchased and watched it many years ago when it first released. It's so unique and special that it's sometimes hard to believe that such an amazing thing could've actually happened in real life. The subtitles were also extremely good. Just a couple small parts where for example a word forgot an "s" at the end or like it should have been "men" instead of "man", but other than that they're REALLY well done. It's sad to think this film never got an international release. It really deserves to be seen by people on every continent and in every country. I EXTREMELY RECOMMEND THIS FILM!! It's one you MUST have in your collection RIGHT NOW. Buy It! Worth Every Cent And More! |

The best movie. Ever.

I know, I know...it's a five year-old movie but you have to admit that it still has the appeal it had five years ago. So let's talk about this movie that started all that 'Wanna die?' craze. Adopted from the real-life experience of a guy narrated over the Internet, this movie is about his peculiar relationship with a pretty girl who lost her boyfriend and can't seem to move on. Gyun-woo senses the girl's sadness despite her attempt at sassiness, and being the nice guy that he is, he stays by the girl's side, doing whatever she fancies letting him do, making her happy and in effect, healing her sorrow. He knows it's a temporary thing, their relationship. But as time passes, the relationship gets deeper and it's becoming quite difficult for Gyun-woo to let go. The girl is grateful for Gyun-woo's company. But she is likewise in an emotional quandary. She knows it's unfair to take advantage of Gyun-woo's good nature, but she needs him to heal. Just when she begins enjoying Gyun-woo's companionship and is slowly letting go of her dead boyfriend's memory, she feels guilt towards Gyun-woo and her dead boyfriend. What's her solution? She asks Gyun-woo to write her a letter, expressing what he really feels for her. This letter, together with her own for Gyun-woo, are placed in a container she calls a time capsule, which both will open two years later. This girl has a fixation for time capsules. I guess when you're hurting from a broken heart, you have your own methods for coping - others go on a shopping or eating binge; she, on time capsules. Anyway, two years later. Gyun-woo shows up at their rendezvous point, she doesn't. Does this mean she's hurting still? Or worse, has she completely moved on and in the process has forgotten Gyun-woo too? Everything about this movie is insanely wonderful that it remains on top of my all-time favorite Korean movies since I watched it five years ago. It has a topnotch story making it difficult to believe that it's an Internet adaptation. It works either way: a light drama with a touch of comedy, or a light comedy with a touch of drama. What really fascinates me is the peculiar relationship between Gyun-woo and the girl (the movie never mentioned her name) and the manner it was presented resulting in the romance aspect of the movie being subtle. Very nicely done. The narration is witty, funny and downright entertaining that nowhere in the duration of the movie would you feel bored. Two thumbs up to the lead actors; if I had more thumbs, I would have gone right ahead and raised them all as well. Special mention to Cha Tae-hyeon. Although not your typical handsome guy, he was so lovable in this movie, naturally funny and quite amusing. No other actor would have been capable of playing Gyun-woo the way he did. It felt like the role was tailor-made for him. From the Internet to the big screen, this movie went on to become a Korean phenomenon, overshadowing movies of the same genre. It set the trend for Korean romcom drama, and while there may have been movies with similar themes which have done well artistically and commercially, this movie is in a class of its own. 10 kimchi dishes out of 10. |
