武俠巨星王羽一改以往大俠形象，初次飾演憤世嫉俗青年的時裝片。楊國良（王羽）是探長（田豐）兒子，國良怪父沉迷工作，母離世仍在查案，隔膜頓生。國良遇上舞女梅琳（邢慧），兩人母親皆殁，了解下迅即同居生活。國良因生活費花盡到俱樂部賭錢，被陳彪（谷峰）騙下巨款，更強姦梅琳。國良憤然殺死陳彪，遭警察圍捕，探長忍痛轟斃兒子，結局唏噓。
Jimmy Wang Yu (The One-armed Swordsman) gets to flex his dramatic muscle in this Lo Chen drama. Wang play kuo-liang, a detective's son who seems to have little or no interest in anything but Mei Lin (Margaret Hsing Hui). Faced with financial problems having to look after Mei Lin and her sister, Kuo-liang gambles and is cheated by a swindler. The hot-headed Kuo-liang tries to exact revenge and his actions leave father and son in a final face-off.

In "My Son", Jimmy Wang Yu plays a young man who is alienated from his police detective father because his father's obsession with work led to the death of his mother. Wang Yu's character, while having a good heart, can't hold a job because he is too short-tempered and always ends up in fights. He yearns to be independent of his hated father. Margaret Hsing Hui does a nice job as Wang Yu's virginal girlfriend, a sweet young woman who Wang rescues from a sexual assault. Hsing Hui convinces as a girl trapped by circumstances into working in tawdry bars, the girl who is able to see the good in rebellious Jimmy Wang. "My Son" is a colorful, broad melodrama, in which one unfortunate event after another befalls the two young lovers, usually due to Wang Yu's inability to control his anger. The film works well because Wang Yu is utterly believable in his hot-tempered role. The film is loaded with violent fights, groovy bars, cool songs, and the passion of youth. Of all the Shaw Brothers' tales of youthful rebellion that I've seen to date, this one is my favorite and I can recommend it highly. |
