YesAsia Editorial Description

Following the success of My Sassy Girl, Korean cinema scored another runaway hit in 2003 with My Tutor Friend. Based on an internet novel, the whimsical, over-the-top romantic comedy launched heartthrob Kwon Sang Woo (Stairway to Heaven) and small-screen starlet Kim Ha Neul (Romance) into instant movie stardom. The film also features a hilarious supporting performance from Gong Yoo (Spy Girl), who would go on to be a star in his own right. The leads' great on-screen chemistry and the entertaining mixture of comedy, romance, and action made My Tutor Friend one of the top-grossing films of 2003 and a must see for romcom fans.

College student Choi Su Wan (Kim Ha Neul) is forced by her mother to take a tutoring job. But her student turns out to be Kim Ji Hoon (Kwon Sang Woo), an uncouth 21-year-old high school student with great fighting skills and serious authority issues. The spunky Su Wan, however, refuses to back down and ends up involved in Ji Hoon's life in more ways than she expected. Amidst the fighting and bickering, Ji Hoon finds himself falling for Su Wan, but her heart seems to lie with someone else.

Professional Review of "My Tutor Friend (Donggabnaegi gwawoehagi) Director's Box (Limited Edition) (Japan Version)"

    May 30, 2003

This professional review refers to My Tutor Friend

Without any glamorous stars or a tragic and everlasting romance, My Tutor Friend won the heart of the audience with its simple but subtle love story between a tutor and her "student". Up to date, it is still the highest grossing domestic movie in Korea this year.

Adapted from an online novel, this is said to be a true encounter of the author Choi Su-wan. Certainly, novel and movie are two different medium. Therefore you could expect the original story to be trimmed and modified in order to fit the pace, as well as the style of the movie. College student Su-wan (Kim Ha-neul) receives a tutor job in which she is supposed to tutor a high school student called Ji-hoon (Kwon Sang-woo). But she never realizes that this high school student is as old as her. Due to his poor academic performance, Ji-hoon has to repeat his high school class over and over again. That explains why he is still in high school. In the beginning, Su-wan finds it painful to tackle with this over-aged high school student. But later when they have spent more time to interact with each other, their relationship gradually changes... Private tutoring is quite an interesting subject to exploit, it is also very intimate to teenagers, the major group of the overall audience. So I would say the film company was really wise to pick this subject matter and develop it into a captivating light-hearted romantic comedy.

Because both films are adapted from an online source, and both of them feature a similar love-comedy, this film is always compared with the 2001 blockbuster My Sassy Girl. To be honest, My Sassy Girl is without doubt one of the best Korean films I have ever seen before. So far there is still no Korean romantic comedy that can surpass, or at least is as good as My Sassy Girl, including My Tutor Friend. Therefore, it seems meaningless to do such a comparison. Having said that, My Tutor Friend is actually not a disappointment. The plot is quite fruitful. It contains elements of comedy, love and action, new director Kim Kyung-hyung successfully tells a story in an intriguing way that keeps the audience engaged. Although the scale of the movie is not very big, most of the scenes are nevertheless utilized at its best. The only flaw of the plot is probably the lack of follow-ups of most sub-plots. For instance, there is a scene when Su-wan's mother meets Ji-hoon's mother outside the chicken store. I would expect a follow-up that tells more about their friendship, but it just ends there. Ji-hoon's reason of repeating class is also not dramatic enough. When I first read the synopsis, I was expecting a sophisticated and surprising plot twist at the end. I thought Ji-hoon's clandestine and tragic past would be revealed, but quite disappointedly, the ending just turned out to be a banal wrap up.

Kim Ha-neul as the cute and innocent college tutor is persuasive. Among all the Korean actresses, she is probably the one that is least glamorous, and it is this mundane appearance that makes her character believable. However, she seems to suffer from the problem of overacting in certain scenes. Similar to Kim, Kwon Sang-woo is also the kind of actor who doesn't rely on a handsome face to act. It is his arrogant gesture that bestows life upon his character. Kwon is also a good action actor who can perform acrobatic moves skillfully.

My Tutor Friend is not flawless, despite its tremendous result at the box office. The plot is not very complete, the romance of Su-wan and Ji-hoon also feels a little bit forced and abrupt. However, just in terms of entertainment value, it is no doubt a very successful commercial film. If you are looking for something to relax and enjoy, you wouldn't go wrong with this one.

Soggy, saggy, and sappy Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
"My Tutor Friend" is a ham-handed attempt at an overly familiar theme -- the blossoming of true love between two polar opposite personalities. Kim Ha Neul and Kwon Sang Woo do their best, but there are no surprises here. We've seen it all before and we've seen it done much better.

Much of the problem with this film is with the script. The movie feels as if it had been written by a committee. The story never flows naturally. Some of the transitions from scene to scene can be jarring and some scenes add nothing to the story. The growth of affection between the central characters is ridiculously contrived and unrealistic.

When one studies acting, one is taught that, in each scene (both in comedy and drama), you must find what your character is fighting for and the stakes for which you are fighting must be very high. For most of this film, the stakes for each character just never seem very important. Consequently, it is hard for the viewer to care.

Equally inept is the film's direction. The lighting in some of the scenes is bad; the cinematography never rises above the pedestrian; the editing is clumsy. Indeed, the only scenes which really come to life are Kwon Sang Woo's fight scenes, which actually are quite spectacular.

I had high expectations for "My Tutor Friend", but ended up greatly disappointed. I cannot recommend this movie.

One of my favorites Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I really enjoyed this movie. The classic tough guy and nice girl. I love this actress. She is so cute and I love her facial expressions. She's very believable. Also the lead guy is a hunk!Very handsome and I really like how he falls in love with the lead girl. He comes to respect her and falls hard for her. My favorite seen is when she,on a bet, has to dance at her school!I love the way his expression changes from laughing at her to one REAL JEALOUS GUY. Also a really pretty scene is when they are in the rain under a light at night. That is a beautiful scene. Like a picture! This is a difinately buy me movie. These two really look like a real couple because the chemestry between them makes is really good.

Delightfully sweet Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Kwon Sang Woo plays Kim Ji Hoon, a transfer student from America who loves to brawl but hates to study. At twenty one, he's still in high school and doesn't seem to be bothered by this. His dad hasn't given up on him though, so he hires a tutor, Choi Su Wan, a junior majoring in English. Ji Hoon makes life miserable for his tutor so the latter will quit. He finds out that Su Wan is not one to give up easily. The two battle head-on wiht neither wanting to be the first to raise the white flag. They tolerated each other's company until Ji Hoon finds himself enjoying Su Wan's company and the latter finds herself thinking about the former. can Su Wan go beyond the level of tutor and be the girlfriend of this guy, a 21-year old high school student?

I'm making a list of my favorite Korean movies and My Tutor Friend flew right on top of that list. I would say this is Korean romantic comedy at its best. The story between Ji Hoon and Su Wan unfolds perfectly: there was no rush in letting the two fall in love in the middle of the movie, which move would be a downright killjoy; neither was too much time wasted in developing a romance between the two, which move would be a downright bore.

You're captivated by the antics of the quirky characters but you never will lose sight of the fact that this movie is a love story between the tutor and her student. I was skeptical about the gang bit and I thought the movie could do away with it, but in retrospect, I thought it blended well with the movie. Besides, the fight scenes were quite good, with a few awesome stunts, though I've seen better.

Anyway, the lead actors. Kwon Sang Woo was close to superb in this movie. The sarcasm and devil-may-care attitude were magnificently delivered that by the time the guy showed his sensitive side, I was blown away. Do I hear sighs in the background? Not to be outdone is Kim Ha Neul who performed equally well. Her character required her to be sassy and demure all at once, a feat she pulled off splendidly.

10 kimchi dishes out of 10.

This is a light romance. A refreshing take on love that develops. No over acting scene and its not an akward role for Kim Ha Neul---but she is better in too beautiful to lie-- watch this and be entertained.
