Set on a small island in Okinawa, the quirky 1999 comedy Nabbie's Love (a.k.a. Nabbie no Koi) revolves around an elderly woman's 60-year love. Winning Nakae Yuji (Hotel Hibiscus) a Best Director award at the Japanese Professional Movie Awards, this film takes a humored look at how one spunky grandma's pursuit of love upturns life in a small village community. Acclaimed veteran actress and Okinawa native Taira Tomi stars as the eponymous heroine Nabbie. Noborikawa Seijin plays her on-screen husband, while real-life husband Taira Susumu plays her lover. Nishida Naomi (Climber's High) won Best Supporting Actress at the Hochi Film Awards and the Yokohama Film Festival for her turn as Nabbie's granddaughter. Backed by balmy island scenery and a jaunty score by Isoda Kenichiro and Michael Nyman, Nabbie's Love is a short, sweet, and delightful ode to living live to the fullest at any age.

Quitting her job in Tokyo, Nanako (Nishida Naomi) returns to her hometown in Okinawa where her family still lives. Life in Okinawa is quiet, relaxing, and free of drama, until Nanako discovers that her grandmother Nabbie (Taira Tomi) is having an affair! Nabbie's illicit relationship with ferry captain Sunra (Taira Susumu) is a shock not only to the family, but to the whole village community. The village clan decides that Nabbie must cut off contact with Sunra who is no longer welcome on the island. But Nabbie, who was forced to separate from her true love sixty years ago, isn't about to give up so easily this time.
