《蟋蟀宰相》是依據史書記載精心打造的一部大背景的虛故事。這部古裝劇以幽默、詼諧的戲說樣式，表現南宋末年忽必烈大一統中國時，南宋臨安府（杭州）宰相賈似道以“小蟲治國到小蟲亡國”的程序。被世人稱作“蟋蟀宰相”的賈似道是一個地地道道的玩家，原本只會玩蟲，且只愿意玩蟲的他，年少時就被父親趕出了家門，後在心上人的威逼下走進了考場，無奈之下，他把自己玩蟋蟀的體會寫成了文章，不成想，這篇〈蟋蟀經〉歪打正著被昏庸貪玩的宋理宗奉為至寶，賈似道從市井小民一躍成為皇帝身邊的紅人，之後扶搖直上成為南宋權傾一時的當朝宰相，由此而演繹出一幕曲折離奇、可笑可恨可嘆的歷史大戲。
