　　優秀舞臺藝術是一個時代、一個國家文化建設水準和綜合實力的集中反映。2002年，文化部和財政部聯合實施了國家舞臺藝術精品工程，計劃在五年內由國家出資兩個億，選拔、打磨一批留得下，立得住，傳之久遠的舞臺藝術精品。國家舞臺藝術精品工程旨在利用國家財政杠桿，支援體現民族特色和國家水準的舞臺藝術作品的創作與生產，激發廣大藝術工作者和全國藝術院團的藝術創造性，建立科學合理的生產機制和管理體制。這項工程的實施，是政府貫徹落實十六大精神和“三個代表”重要思想，大力推進先進文化建設的一項重要舉措。

　　該劇以聞名世界的敦煌為背景，刻畫了青年畫師莫高不斷追求藝術最高境界的堅韌形象和將門之女月牙衝破封建桎梏、忠貞不渝的純潔真情。對敦煌石窟壁畫癡迷的莫高在穿越大漠時生命垂危，幸得月牙相救。兩人的愛情遭到了月牙父親的阻攔，在血與火的威逼之下，月牙為人性的平等和愛情獻出了生命，莫高在巨大的悲愴中完成了藝術絕唱。
