YesAsia Editorial Description

Some of Korea's biggest stars came together in 2009 for the Korea-Japan Telecinema7 project, a series of seven feature-length mini-dramas released to great anticipation in both countries. Featuring a dream team of talent both behind and in front of the camera, the seven movies paired up top Korean drama directors with Japanese drama screenwriters for unique collaboration opportunities.

Big Bang's T.O.P and Seung Ri plus Palace S heroine Heo Yi Jae play a trio of 19-year-old murder suspects on the run from the police in the youth drama Nineteen - 19, directed by Jang Yong Woo and written by Inoue Yumiko (White Tower).

Two Big Bangs and a Princess on the run Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
“Nineteen” is about Seoul teenagers coming to terms with indecisive futures. Jeong-hun (T.O.P.) worries little about study, working part-time at an Internet cafe; Eun-yeong (Palace S’s Yi-jae Heo) as a sick mother in hospital and Min-seo (Big Bang’s Seung Ri) likes to take photos of pretty Yeong-eo, also working with Jeong-hun at the cafe. In debt and strapped for cash, Yeong-eo pleads with Eun-yeong to loan her money, but Eun-yeong struggling herself with hospital bills – isn't pleased. Yeong-eo then manipulates (sorry asks) Jeong-hun for money, saying she’ll go on a date with him if he’ll help her debt problem out. Jeong-hun naively goes with Yeong-eo to a nightclub and afterwards, by the Han river, lends her electronic cash. Pleased with his gorgeous new girlfriend, all seems well in the world of Jeong-hun as he strolls beside the Han River. But next day, Yeong-eo is found drowned by the river. The police arrest the three teens, as they were last to see Yeong-eo alive. The grilling isn’t pleasant; Jeong-hun due to loaning Yeong-eo money and dating her the night she died; Eun-yeong arguing with Yeong-eo (over money) and Min-seo due to him taking ‘pervy’ photos of Yeong-eo. Angered at the police’s ‘hospitality’, the 3 teens dramatically escape the police station, making for a quiet subway to talk about their predicament. Each agree they’re innocent and hide out until the truth is revealed. Two cops, meanwhile, search for the three 19 year olds and a girl’s murder to solve.

This ‘movie’ is a single TV drama episode. Its fundamentally about teens needing to make crucial life decisions at the cusp of adulthood, but the installed cynical ‘murder’ plot isn’t a novel way to show three 19 olds how to ‘realise’ the importance of their futures. Mainly, the 19s run away from responsibilities; Min-seo having controlling parents, Jeong-hun having considerate parents but rejects replicating his sister’s university academia and Eun-yeong finding it hard to cope with her mother’s illness. The ‘murder’ is shown as a catalyst for the teens to heighten awareness and focus on themselves. But ‘pushy parents’ and ‘ill responsibility’ themes are swamped into suppression by the ‘run and hide’ plot with 'wise words' tacked on the end. Acting’s good from T.O.P., his vulnerable character likeable and the rest of the cast perform well. Certainly the police chief role. Big Bang fans will love this, but for ‘top pop’ K-dramas go for “You’re Beautiful” or “Over the Rainbow”.
