Based on the best-selling Morimura Seiichi novel, the classic murder mystery The Proof of the Man (a.k.a. Ningen no Shomei) has now been remastered on DVD for the first time ever. Directed by Sato Junya (who would go on to make the 2005 blockbuster Yamato), The Proof of the Man chronicles the investigation into the dead body of a young African-American man (Yamanaka Joe) discovered in a Japanese hotel. Matsuda Yusaku (Resurrection of the Golden Wolf) stars as the detective whose investigation leads him to New York City. There he teams up with an American detective (Broderick Crawford) to uncover the dead youth's tragic past.

Released in 1977, the film adaptation of The Proof of the Man was immensely popular with audiences. Its popularity can be explained by its depiction of a hot issue in Japan - Japanese children of half-American descent and their unfair treatment in Japanese society - blended with a compelling and touching mystery. The story was later adapted into two television films in 1993 and 2001, one of them starring world-renowned actor Watanabe Ken, and two television series, one in 1978 immediately following the film's success and the other in 2004 starring popular actor Takenouchi Yutaka.
