July Rhapsody (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
May 29, 2002 This drama is a good effortThis is my first movie of Ann Hui. This is a serious drama about a couple ready to go their separate way. The story is mostly about Jacky's character in his 40 something and his fling with his teenage student Karena Lin. Anita, who is Jacky's wife in this movie, also has a hidden past with her teacher back in teen year. There is never any big dramatic moment and that perhaps makes it a boring movie for some people. But this movie has excellent character development. If you like serious drama, you will appreciate how the director and this script explore the inner feeling and emotion of the couple in this movie. If you are in your forties and has similar issues as Jacky's character, you may feel a little more. I would not say this movie is a complete success but it is a very good effort. I will pay attention to other Ann Hui's movie from now on.

Tokyo Raiders
May 29, 2002 Not exceptional but it tries hardThey did spend time designing the fight scenes and action sequences in this movie; but I think they use the stunt gun too many times and some scenes are little bit long. This movies tries to be funny as well as action-packed; but it does not degraded to become silly. However Tony Leung and Ekin Chen are not convincing as kung fu fighters. But if you are not too demanding, this movie is worth reviewing.

Days Of Tomorrow
May 29, 2002 Not Just Romeo and JulietThis movie is more than just telling the story of a pair of doomed lovers; it also does a fine job in character development. This movie moves along nicely and gets away from the usual problem of similar chick movie about obsessive love. In other words you see very few scenes of teary eyes begging for love. I especially like the setting of this movie around early '60s in New Territories HK. The music score is also excellent.

Who's The Woman, Who's The Man
April 16, 2002 A worthy sequelA twist to the original although not as good. I guess the surprise element was gone after the first installment; but this is still a worthy sequel to watch with great performance from Anita, Anita, and Leslie.

Love On A Diet
April 16, 2002 Good Movie but Bad MakeupThis movie has a good premise and it was mostly, if not entirely, shot in Japan. I like the songs too. The idea of going on diet to please someone you love happens all the times around us. This story exaggerates this aspect of life and makes it a comedy. However, the makeup on Sammi and Andy made it difficult for them to act. The makeup on Sammi was horrible especially when she appeared to slim down 60 pounds during her initial diet/exercise. In terms of visual effect, this movie is a failure. The ending is also predictable. If the script takes a page from "Shrek" and emphazies even fat people can be beautiful amd enjoy life too, it would have been better. Instead, it just goes through the usual happy ending, everybody slims down incredibly and lives happily ever after.

April 12, 2002 Good Beginning, Bad EndingThis movie has a good premise. Sammo was a retard and his brother Jackie took care of his daily live. The beginning of this movie features good acting and great character development. Jackie Chan even kissed his girl friend "several" times in a picnic scene. Unfortunately, it couldn't resist the temptation to sell out at the end. There was lot of guns and violence in the final battle between good and evil; but the ending was plain stupid. Five good cops ended up in jail because they wanted to rescue Sammo. Good beginning but bad ending.

The Killer
April 9, 2002 Great Movie By John WooThis movie perhaps does not need any more viewer rating since it is available almost in every major store. But the story line is great and John Woo delivers his super craft. Chow was at his best as the lone killer with a kind heart.

As Tears Go By
April 9, 2002 A Romantic Gangster MovieThis was the breakthrough film for Wong Kai Wai but the story line is hardly new. The cast is great and the acting super. I can also see the smooth directing skill and good camera work throughout the entire film. Good flow from scene to scene; but the ending is all predictable. Anyone with half a brain will have let that "fly" character die alone at the end. Although there was a lovely description of the romance between Cheung and Maggie, it became all too unbelievable at the end. Just ask this simple question -- will you end your life like Cheung as though there is no hope left in this work with a beautiful cousin like Maggie waiting for you. In addition, depending on how conservative you are, this movie romantize gangster activities like the Hollywood in the 60's and 70's. Cheung's character in that sense is not that likeable.

Happy Together
April 9, 2002 Boring like HellI am not against homosexuality as it is really a personal perference more than anything else. However this movie is boring as well, comparing with other U.S. good movies for similar issues like "Chasing Amy", etc. Yes, it is a courageous film especially from Far East. But I can't give this movie a high rating because of it tackles a controversal subject. This movie is NOT a documentry. The pace of this movie is very slow and it has little entertainment value.

To Live AKA : Live Times (Taiwan Version)
April 8, 2002 Great Movie that is worth watching again and againThis film is on the same par as "Farwell to My Concubine". If you happen to hate the sex abuse part depicted in the "Farewell" movie, this may be your best Chinese movie ever made. Director Zhang effectively mixed historical events into this movie and made the audience really involved with what happened to the characters portrayed in this movie. There are so many great scenes in this movie and they can be both funny and sad at the same time. This movie is worthing watching over and over again.

April 8, 2002 Another Master Piece by Director Zhang
This movie is about a reformed gamber and his wife. The director did a great job in intertwining historical events with this couple's family life. Great acting especially the gambler's character. But I really get involved with all the characters in this movie and become really cared for each of them. This movie is worth watching over and over again.

Laughters Of Water Margins
April 8, 2002 Marginally Successful MovieA silly adaptation of a classic Chinese novel. This movie does not contain enough laughs and jokes to make it a hit.

THE CONTRACT
April 8, 2002 It is a missI don't know what Micheal Hui wanted to express in this movie; but this movie is a big miss. Laughs were few and far between. Most sequences in this film were too long especially when Ricky and Micheal tried to steal the contract out of the MTV building. This movie contains lot of scenes for magic shows; but they were poorly done and added to the demise of an already-boring movie.

Spiritual Love (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
April 6, 2002 A Funny Ghost StoryDated special effect but a good cast and a good script still makes this movie shine. The ghost-hunting scenes in the disco work for me.

Once A Thief
April 6, 2002 This Movie Looks Good Even On VCDI really like this movie. The case did a great job. John Woo's direction of this excellent script delivered humor, fun, excitment, action, and sadness. I don't think too many folks will be disappointed spending $5 for this.

April 6, 2002 Great ComedyI guess this was their third film in the '70s. I like to see the Kung Fu jokes in this movie and the hilarious fight in the supermarket between Sam Hui and the shop-lifter; but the holdup scenes in the cinema is a little exaggerated.

April 6, 2002 It actually looks better the second time aroundI watched this movie in HK when it first came out after the successful "Game Gamblers Play". At that time the movie was not that appealing to me. The film didn't do as good as Hui's first film in the HK box office. I guess the humor was a little too deep for HK folks at that time. But I enjoyed this movie much more when I watched it almost 25 years later. The joke about that waiter who was obessive about cleaniness and used his tongs for everything is still circulating in the Internet these days.

April 6, 2002 A Great Comedy buit Poor VCD transfer
I wondered whether the engineer who transferred this great Micheal Hui's movie was actually sleeping while making this VCD. I am not looking for pan-and-scan as in other standard US release; but at least give us some decent effort to center the film correctly on the disk 1. Sometimes I can't even see their heads when they stands up in the film. I just hope the folks who paid for the DVD version has better luck.

The Emperor And The Assassin
April 6, 2002 A Rarely Seen EpicThis movie portrays the classic Chinese tale of Emperor Qin Shi Huang and the assassin the came to kill him. The pace of this movie was slow in the beginning and it can be confusing to folks who have no understanding of Chinese history at that time; but the film eventually does a great job in describing the harsh emperor's obession to unite China and become her only king. However I stop short of giving this movie a 10 because I don't quite like the treatment of this movie for the assassin.

April 6, 2002 They deliver it again
Once again, Gong Li and Director Zhang make it happen and it is great to see Gong Li sing and dance. The story was told through the eyes of this poor village boy who came to Shanghai early last centry to look for a better life. He joined the gang through his uncle's connection with the Shanghai triad. He hated Gong Li's character in the beginning but later became friends in a short period of time. The script is great but it has a sad ending. I am really moved by what happened on the Island at the end of this film. This movie was relased in the US under a different name.
