Not One Less (VCD) (China Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou directs Not One Less, a compelling portrait of China's rural education system and the inspiring struggle of one lone teacher. When the elderly teacher in a small rural village has to resign his position, the mayor appoints a thirteen year-old girl (Wei Min Zhi) to temporarily take his place. But her inexperience and stubborn refusal to compromise get the better of her, leading one student to leave the class and visit the big city in hopes of finding work. The loss of the one student is a large blow to the girl...she made a pact with the previous teacher that if she lost one student she would not receive a bonus! Determined to find and bring him back, she turns to the only people who can truly help her: the students in her class! Zhang Yimou uses a cast of unknown, untrained actors to bring his refreshing and starkly realistic story to life, and finds numerous opportunities to display the determination and heart present in the human condition. A winner at the 1999 Venice Film Festival, Not One Less comes alive with tears, laughter, and fascinating humanity.

In the crushing poverty of rural China, a young woman is ordered to a remote village to be their substitute teacher. Barely older than her students, the shy girl is charged with keeping the class intact for one month or she won't be paid. Faced with overwhelming family debt, her biggest little troublemaker disappears into the city to find work. The stubborn teacher, however, is determined to follow the boy and bring him back to school. Once in the city, her simple peasant pleas fall on deaf ears, and only when the local television station sympathizes does her search bear fruit.

A story of rural China, poverty, and education Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Not One Less is about a 13 year old girl who becomes a substitute teacher in a one room school house because the school can't afford anyone else and their old teacher has to be absent for one month to look after his mother who has fallen ill.

She is told to take care that no kid drop out from school. One kid does and this little girl goes to the city to find him and bring him back.

Not One Less is the story of rural China in a mountainous area, poverty, and education. Not One Less has beautiful pictures and is an early masterpiece of Zhang Yimou.

Original story with a powerful meaning for family Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Not one less is one of the best foreign films that I have seen. The story starts with a young, timid substitute teacher only 13 years old. She is presented with a demanding task of keeping the students together as well as educating them while their teacher leaves to care for his ill relative.

As if her job wasn't difficult enough, one of students is forced to leave the village to seek work in the city to pay for his family's debt. The young substitute with no money at hand tries various way to get to the city. When she finally makes it, she is faced with the challenge of how to find her student.

The story is incredibly touching and solidly put together. Compared with those movies from Hollywood, this ranks extremely high in my view. The movie portrays the poverty of education in the poor villages of China. The substitute, although very young, has the determination and heart to succeed. The title "Not One Less" speaks for itself.

Best foreign language film I have yet seen. As you watch, keep in mind that the children are not professional actors, just rural kids. This movie is touching, and educational. My eight year old was glued to T.V. and is now more thankful for where and how she lives.

Moving Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
It is an impressive piece of story showing the will and determination of a young girl. Very emotional even for a butch man. Good directing. Don't miss "Road Home" with similar storyline and effect.
