Let the cry go forth: Gordon Chan has finally made a fun movie! Gadget head, Gordon Chan, has channeled Wong Kar-wai's lazybones sensibility and brought forth a monster of summer laziness and ennui. A goony riverboat casino floating downstream on the buoyant backs of its actors, Okinawa Rendez-Vous is a pageant of Chinese superstars on holiday, but as Japanese as daikon.
The plot? A bunch of Hong Kongers descend on Okinawa for vacations, complications ensue, and they go home. Leslie Cheung plays Jimmy Tong, a criminal there to trade a stolen yakuza boss' journal for a plastic-wrapped cube of cash. The boss is Ken Sato, whose object of affection (Faye Wong) has absconded with said cube. Tony Leung Kar-fai plays the self-important HK Police filing clerk on vacation with his girlfriend (Gigi Lai) who gives Faye a lift to a new life. This is Faye Wong's first film since Chungking Express and Gordon Chan is resolutely unable to pull a performance out of her, which doesn't matter since her mere presence lends the proceedings a certain classy giddiness. Leslie does his restrained thing, playing some brilliant scenes with partner Vincent Kok (who is showing up more and more in movies these days), but the standouts here are Tony Leung - who reminds us all of why he's actually a genius comedian - and Gigi Lai who gives the kind of performance that cameras live to capture. There's not an ounce of seriousness here - even Leslie's lonely jewel thief is a satiric pose, a riff on Galouise puffing French romantics circa 1963. The only character whose emotions are heavier than feathers is lovelorn gangster, Sato, whose henchmen must bear the brunt of their lonely boss' romantic obsessions. An Okinawan Nashville these characters cross one another's paths, coming up with the most complicated reasons to talk to one another, pretending that they're working (solving crimes or committing them) when actually if they stalled their motor mouths for a minute they'd realize that all they want to do is fall in love a little. Okinawa Rendez-Vous doesn't end so much as it peters out leaving the audience feeling like a resort town at the end of the season. One by one the stars flicker and fade away leaving Okinawa standing in there wake: empty, but all the brighter for their having been there. by Grady Hendrix |

I can't believe this movie has an overall rating of 41/2 stars!! I would have given it only 1 star if not for Leslie. A while back I wrote a review panning this movie. It never got posted. I think it was deliberate so as not to reduce the ratings. Altho I am a great Leslie fan, this movie totally sucks and I think Leslie knew it too. The 1 1/2 hrs felt like 3 hours; I would have stopped watching after half an hour and thrown the VCD away if not for Leslie. There is no plot and absolutely no chemistry between Leslie and button-nosed Faye Wong. I never liked Faye and after watching this movie, I know why. She tries to act so cool but ends up so stuck-up. I can't stand her uppity behaviour. I can't imagine any man falling for her in this movie; she's like a cold fish and she certainly isn't pretty enough for Leslie. She looked more like his elder sister. Don't waste your time and money to buy this. Don't say you haven't been warned. |

it's funny it just read the other reviews a minute ago and laughed. it is not a movie that EVERYONE gets. it very querkie and silly at times. but the movie has a nice romatic comedy feel and i loved the three main characters. i think if you go in with a open mind ... you'll come out with a smile. Leslie will forever be the GREAT pretender to me... |

Poorly written plot/script. I thought it was totally a waste for these talented actors (Leslie Cheung, Tony Leung Kar Fei, Gigi Lai) to take part in this film. I rated 5 out of 10 because of the star-cast. If you're looking for a good film, this is *not* the one for you. If you're one of the fans of the actors mentioned, then no harm to have a glimpse. |

Okinawa Rendezvous was quite a disappointing film despite an all-star cast. The cinematography at the beginning (with Leslie Cheung stealing from the evidence room at police headquarters) of the film was nicely done despite the lack of attention it got from me. I had a hard time following it. After that, it was down-hill and the movie was slow and plain with a poorly written plot and script (the script mixes chinese, english, and japanese in each scene which does not make sense to me). The movie flows between Underworld Gangster Story and a Romance Story. However, Faye Wong and Gigi Lai does a good job acting but I find the rest of the actors seem to be a bit bored. There is a bit of a love triangle story in the movie between the three actors. If you are a fanatic of one of the actors, then run to the store. |
