good as gold Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
korean cinema has grown up alot since the 80's and this is by far the most sophisticated and compelling evidence of it. sure, the theme is as old as the first two oldest professions but park, the director, has carved out a dandy with his gritty and saturated visual storytelling, subtle editing and almost campy, not anything near "kill bill", but entertaining fight scenes. and yes, the premise of the film, a theme revolving around the notion of ostracism and vengeance, ala shelley's frankenstein, is nothing revolutionary but the shear relentless forward momentum in the development of the plot and the taboo-ridden contraptions within the story-arc ebb and flow unlike anything seen in korean cinema. it has been pointed out to me that the there are points within the plot which begs to have the viewer practice some heavy dose of suspension of disbelief but it makes for some good entertainment nonetheless. this work is as superior as any japanese mystery/action-genre of the past 10 years.

'You are just about to hit by an express train.' a comment made by the organiser of the Melbourne International Film Festival. I totally agree with that. The plot is brilliant.

Absolutely Brilliant Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I was wary of this film because it had a won an award, usually you would think this is an arty film of some kind to win somthing, but boy was I wrong!

I loved this film, one of the best films I have seen in ages. The first few minutes I was thinking this does not look any good at all but then it got into the story straight away. There was no slow build up or anything and I was kept glued to the screen and could not switch off even though it was past my bedtime.

However if you are easily offended by sex and violence, I would not recommend this. If you are not, then get it!!!!!!

Graphic, Intense, Dramatic and Utterly Original Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Completely original and made with the precision of a Swiss watch and the art of a tortured Van Goh brush. Evidently, I'm not the only one singing its praises. Cannes Film Festival gave it the Grand Prix award (2nd place) and Universal Pictures have bought the rights to the movie for a U.S. remake staring Brad Pitt. If the casting rumors are true, I think Brad Pitt would be perfect for the role. The main character is intense, physical, bitter, edgy and on the border of sanity, much like the characters Pitt has played in Fight Club, 12 Monkeys and Snatch. This film is completely original, with suprises, twists and turns, but the well done visuals don't exhaust the viewer. It also does a unexpected mind job on the viewer and it's often impossible to predict what will happen next. Without spoiling anything for anyone, imagine Kill Bill without the wires and samurai sword (but leave the violence and revenge theme) throw in a dash of Hitchcock (suspense, morality and social corruption) and an ounce of Kubrick (tight, precise film making and wierdness blending with the sublime) and you have Old Boy. Buy it, rent it, just plain see it however you can and get ready for the ride of your cinema life because we ain't in Kansas anymore.....

It dosen't get any better than this! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Faaarr out, this is the best movie i have seen in a very long time.In a genre where it is so hard to be original this movie blows all the hollywood pretenders out of the water.Simply stunning on all levels it achieves the highest levels of cinematic brilliance that others can only dream of.I realy have to think back along time to find comparisons to how much impact this movie had on me but i would have to say that it's better than two of my favs of the genre "Se7en" and "The Silence Of The Lambs".
Overall i would say the last time i was this shocked by a movie was the first time i saw Paul Verhoeven's "Robobcop" and Choi Min-Sik's performance in the lead role is the best i have seen since Robert De Niro in "Taxi Driver"

Why does everyone say this movie is great? Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
...because it is. Worth watching. I must say, it could be less violent, but a good/interesting story. Strong characaters and great acting.
