Whoa!!!
| The opening sequence of the movie was truely awesome. Choi is fantastic in his role. There is a long battle scene that involve twenty or more people in a single take. I couldn't believe it. |

best of best. Grand Prix from Cannes!
| It got one of the largest awards in the world. Probably the hardest award to receive. Grandprix in Cannes!, probably harder to receive than Academic awards which are usually given to crap hollywood movies. This movie is brilliant. Made by "quality". When you watch it, think once more. This movie will be out in the US theater in October anywayz. I will definitely go there and watch it! I watched this 2 times in theater when I was in Korea. It is worth to watch it. I am going to buy this one right now, and share with my friends. |

OH, SO...SO...SO...GOOD!!!!!!!
|
I watched this movie last night and it literally blew my mind!!! It's different from any of Park Chan-Wook's previous work (OK, maybe similar to SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE for the storyline revolve around ONE single thing: Revenge!!) from the way it's made, the production design, the way the camera angled and everything else... Again, Mr. Park has not failed his fan to create yet another BRILLIANT MASTERPIECE! Yes, the concept/story is disturbing and the "actions" are violent, but these are the very core necessities of the movie because they help portray the RAGE and HATRED that the two main characters possess. The violence in this movie is no where as gory in comparision to those of Ryuhei Kitamura's movies! Choi Min-Sik, Choi Min-Sik, Choi Min-Sik... If he can be any better of an actor than he already is, then the word "best" will lose its meaning. I've seen all of his movies, and starting to come to the belief that the man has multiple-personality syndrome. He's never stop surprising me everytime with his powerful thus unforgetable performance. Yoo Ji-Tae's performance in OLD BOY surpasses his previous role, however, I sometimes senses the same Yoo Ji-Tae that was in NATURAL CITY... I haven't give any bits of OLD BOY away because the point is YOU MUST WATCH THIS MOVIE to appreciate it for what a masterpiece it is and also for the Cannes prize that it took home for Korean and Asian Cinema. |

The Actor
|
With each new Choi Min-Sik film I watch I grow more and more convinced that he is one of the finest film actors in the world. In his bravura performance in "Failan" he dragged something out of his guts that made me cry for all the opportunites missed in my own life. In "Oldboy" he outdoes himself. If pressed I could probably find some flaws in "Oldboy." But do they matter? No. This film is about watching Choi Min-Sik showing us how one man will react to the most extraordinary of circumstances. Speaking to my fellow Westerners, if you're on this web site you like Asian films. That's why we're here. "Oldboy" is one of the best. Buy it. Study it. Love it. While we in the West get force fed Hollywood pablum, cobbled together by committee and starring interchangable name brand actors, the Koreans are in their golden age of filmmaking. "Oldboy" is another jaw-droppingly good Korean flick. And Choi Min-Sik's performance is the show. "Oldboy" is not a film for everyone. But if you're a fan of great acting and can handle some very outre' subject matter, don't miss this film. 9.5 out of 10 only because I thought the female lead was a tad underwritten. But she's not the reason this movie is so good. |

About Oldboy
|
Hi I don't think the movie is available in Mainland as I haven't seen it at any store yet. However, it is good to see you guys' comments here before I watch the movie. The actor looks familiar, and I think he was in FISH too. he doesn's look like Korean though. |

oldboy - a masterpiece or overrated?
|
To put it bluntly, I think the movie is spectacular and it is one of very best Korean movies I've seen. However I also acknowledge many people would hate the movie for its violence, the "grim" story line - as the reviewer below has put it - and the controversal theme. However you cannot deny the director's brilliance in putting dazzling visuals and the twisting plot in one neat package without compromising the integrity of the movie. Each cut and scene is meticulously shot and all the little things in the movie are there for reasons. However I'll be doing a disservice to Chan-Wook Park if I'm just praising him for his technical masteries. I felt his previous movie, Sympathy for Mr. Vangeance (복수는 나의 것), while being an excellent showcase movie for film school students, was void of any real passion or emotion. It's rather weird to speak of a film with so many instances of characters screaming that way but I sincerely thought Sympathy for Mr. Vangeance was a little too mechanical and calculated for its own good to be successful in the mainstream market. On the other hand Oldboy wears its heart on its sleeves(so to speak). Perhaps it's because of the presence of Choi who is obviously one of most dynamic performer in the Korean movie scene currently or maybe Park himself was just more determined to make the movie a bit easier to digest but in any case, Oldboy's raw emotions are a fresh breeze of air. Speaking of the raw stuff, the movie contains a scene where Choi chomps on a live squid in a sushi place. Frankly I have no idea why so many people were so enraged over that scene as eating live sea creatures is pretty common thing in Asia although I must add they are usually chopped and washed before being consumed. I've personally eaten live Octopus many times and while I loved it, my North American friends couldn't imagine somebody doing such a thing so obviously there's a cultural gap here. The movie is quite violent but not as gory as some reviews would have you think. The emotional pain of the characters is probably what hits you most. However as you've probably noticed I'm not getting into any of the story line and will leave you to discover it for yourself. Overall, I think it is a bit flawed(I wish I could talk more about it, but I'm not getting into any detail here ;) ) but still a great great film. Watch it with an open mind and it'll reward you. If you don't like grim story lines, stop right there and go watch something like "Too beautiful to lie" (그녀를 믿지 마세요) which I've also enjoyed for totally different reasons. |

so so
| I don't know what other reviewers liked about this film. The movie was just alright but not so great like the others have said. The ending is kind of corny. And too grim for my taste. But if you like that sort of film then watch it. |

A Story of Love and Loss...and Vengance
|
Old Boy, the latest in a seemingly long string of revenge flicks that have come onto the world. It was a good film. Very psycholological with an ending that is totally out of left field, that will make you grabe your DVD remoted and rewind and say "bwah?" or "what the hell?????" It is about a man who is kidnapped in 1988 and he is held in a room for 15 years without a single explanation. We see him escape and seek revenge against his captors. His journey will take him into the deepest and darkest depths of love and to the deepest and darkest depth of pain. None of which is a pleasent. It is a journy that began when he was in highschool and ends in a rather shocking conclusion. Very similar to Kill Bill and Ichii the Killer in its brutality and The Cement Garden and Boxing Helena in its sexuality it is one of the most gripping and disturbing films that I have seen. I suggest anyone who loves Korean cinema has got to see this film. It shows how talented Korean writers and directors are. The US, France, Germany and Japan are not the only countries that make great films. On a side note. Miramax has optioned to make Old Boy into an American film and it will star Brad Pitt. I hope you enjoyed my mini review. |

Not from the Japanese comic book
| The title may be the same and the story may be based on the comic book from Japan but the plot was completely re-written and Korean. Just won the Grand Prize in Cannes...a definite must watch. Even with all the violence still a masterpiece! |
