太行山深處坐落著一個古老而貧窮的老井村。多少年代了，祖祖輩輩打井汲水，但只留下一個個幹窟窿。老井村人打了百多眼幹井，不單找不到水，甚至犧牲了不少性命。然而他們卻依然抱存一線希望。
返鄉青年孫旺泉，繼承祖輩的意願，立誓用自己的知識挖出水來。為了這口井，他舍棄巧英對他刻骨銘心的愛，違心地做了年輕寡婦的倒插門女婿。
老井，終於冒出水來，巧英也離開了，但旺泉的心卻像岩石一般被深深地鑲嵌在太行山那古老而貧瘠的石壁上。
There was an old, poor village called old well village deep in the taihang mountain, For years, generations dug wells for water, but there were only dry holes. Many villagers had lost their lives while digging hundreds of these dry wells, Finding no water at all. However, they still had hope.
A young man named sun wangquan returned to the village, Inherited the will of his ancestors, And swore to dig a real well by his own knowledge. In order to accomplish this, He turned down Qiaoying. Who loved him very much, and, Against his own will, married a widow.
Water finally filled the old well. Qiaoying left the village, But wangquan's heart, like a rock, Had been enchased in the old and arid cliff of the taihang mountain.
