YesAsia Editorial Description

Ken explores new musical grounds !

Treading on the solo path for the first time in his career, Ken Chu sheds off his F4 idol-image for a while to offer you English-flavored rock n' roll via On Ken's Time . Ken has been working on this long player for 3 years together with top musicians from Sandee Chen to David Tao. Ken's chart suspicious principal track Never Gonna Stop is was highly anticipated before release. All his devotees should also keep an eye out for his tune Black & White that he wrote personally in commemoration of the unforgettable actress Audrey Hepburn.

Additional warm recommendations include La La La by Mayday's A Xin, Lured written by Yi Jia Yang who was also responsible for Stefanie Sun's Encounter, Stupid Lover a song contributed by Ken's pals David Tao and Wu Bai, Tanya Chua's rock tune Awareness as well as Ken's mid-tempo rock treat Reborn that ponders about the chance of reunification with an old flame. All this musical magic plus other passionate melodies make On Ken's Time a temptation too good to resist.

The Hong Kong Special Edition comes with the Bonus VCD consists of the MVs for "Never Gonna Stop" and "Lalala". Initial limited edition also offering an exquisite On Ken's Time Memo Pad - order while supplies last!

Figuring out his way: On Ken's Time (Hong Kong Special Edition) ~ Ken Chu

All F4 idols Jerry Yan, Vic Chou and Vanness Wu, except Ken Chu, have released their own album before the end of last year. His devotees have been waiting for Ken's exciting maiden album On Ken's Time for five years and now it's finally out. It contains ten Mandarin songs and one extra Cantonese song, 100 Days After Breakup (Track#11), in the Hong Kong Special Edition.

Chu may not be the most handsome, stylish and most popular member among F4, but it is generally believed that Chu is blessed with greater talents in singing. The present reviewer thinks that his voice is warm and sincere, cheering and touching. He has got a lot of potential as he shows in both rock n' roll and ballads although it would be better if he was more passionate.

Obviously, Chu is still figuring out his way in On Ken's Time, the first ever album of his. Various musicians such as Tanya Chua, Chen Shanni, Wu Bei etc. were invited to write or produce songs with their unique characters. The record company hopes exposing Ken to more genres of music will help him develop into a decent singer.

In fact, some songs display a bit of Brit-Hop, a type of English rock n' roll, and are much better than those karaoke-bounded tunes. It is a fabulous maiden album.

The leading track Never Stop (Track#1) is gorgeous. Up-and-coming lyricist, Ke You Lun, son of Ke Shou Liang, has done a very great job in setting the scene, using poppy and catchy words though not delicate enough. Chu's performance is brilliant. 100 Days After Breakup, the only Cantonese song, is just plain and ordinary and there is definitely room to improve as far as Cantonese pronunciation and some other factors are concerned.

But I (Track#2) is an appealing ballad describing the feeling of being isolated and lonely. Mayday and Wu Bei contribute to La La La (Track#3) and Silly Lover (Track#7), both songs are very refreshing. Besides, Black & White (Track#5), written by AT17, Sandee Chen and Chu himself, Trapped (Track#6) and A Nice Man (Track#4) are also worthy of listening to.

Apprehend (Track#9), written by Tanya Chua, is hundred-percent rock n' roll and very suitable for Tanya to sing too.

Recommendations: Never Stop and But I

Disappointing Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
I was very excited about Ken having his own CD. But after playing this CD a few times, it is disappointing. He needs to improve in his singing because sometimes he sounds like he is struggling with the lyrics. The music is not all that great, the material is very mundane.

a good start Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This album caught my attention cos it sounds diferent from other mandarin-pop albums. I agree with the previous comments, this album sound western. The music is really good. Though his vocal is just normal, he can express the feelings of the songs very well. I actually like the whole album. My most favorite tracks are Ke Shi Wo and Fu Huo. Ken is very lucky to have a chance to work with talented musicians/composers where he can learn from. This album makes me want to see how this artist would develop in the future...

A breakthorugh album Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'm no asian, but I travel a lot in asia these days & I always make it a point to bring or buy something from a particular place I've been. One of the things that I bring a long with are usually cd's of local artists or dvds. There has been a huge change of asian culture, as I have noticed. Though I always think that asians are good at making movies, I never thought that they could make great music, too! I was asking a friend of mine from Taipei of some great music & artist in Taiwan, she recommended me a couple of cds, and this one really appealed to me. I think the very first reason she recommended this to me is because I grew up in London, so she said you're gonna like this coz this is a brit rock type of music. She was right, it's totally awesome! I just couldnt put it down. I've learned a couple of chinese words during my stay at Taipei & Shen zen,China, so it's not really hard for me to understand some of the lyrics. A great ensemble of songs & a fusion of modern rock guitar with the classical cello! I always thought chinese people are in to traditional type of music, but I was wrong. This Ken Chu is talented & my friend told me that he's a member of asia's most popular boyband F4!Oh well, I didnt recognize him at first. I've been everywhere in asia, and I keep on hearing this F4. From the streetsweepers in Manila, to the little kids in Vietnam(you'll really know a phenomenal success if kids can recogize an artist), but I didn't really pay much attention, coz I'm not really into boyband music! That's why after buying this album, I'm always aware of them now. When I went to Japan, their pictures are everywhere, from the train stations to the magazines...man, they're really hot! This album really blew me away! and I am a fan of Ken Chu now. I just hope he'll continue his efforts and produce another amazing album, and I'm gonna buy them even if I'm back home

The Artistic Chu Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Truly an exceptional album! Very well-made! Makes you feel your listening to a western album, only with mandarin lyrics! The songs were well-interpreted, and Ken Chu really can belt out songs, both rock and ballad. Good choices of song, though it makes you doubt sometimes whether Ken Chu can reach some of the high notes in some of the songs, but he did, amazingly. His songs aren't really easy to sing, the cello accompaniment especially in Black & White & But I added a taste of classic touch & elegance to these songs. Brit pop/rock really is suitable for Ken Chu,and I advice him to stick to this style. No doubt about it, he is really the musically talented among F4.I was likewise surprise of his other talents, which is photography. I thought the photos in his "taiwan photoalbum version", were photos of him & his fellow F4, but pictures of human interests, very artistic.Good thing I bought this album & the Taiwan version, coz I finally realized that mandarin/taiwan artists are really talented.I hope he could also publish a "photobook", coz there are singers I know of that also juggles in both music & photography. He's very promising as a photographer, as well. Keep it up. We'll be waiting for your next project!
