On The Edge is a beautifully etched drama about a young man who conceals his adolescent pain behind a mordant sense of humor and is bent for self-destruction .
After a near – fatal accident in a stolen car , 19 year – old Jonathan Breech (Cillian Murphy ) is given two choices – prison or a psychiatric hospital . He begrudgingly accepts the latter , though he makes it clear to his doctor (Stephen Rea ) that he doesn’t believe in therapy .
He begins the road to realization when he befriends a fellow patlent , Toby (Jonathan Jackson ) , a sensitive , tormented young man who blames himself for his brother’s accidental death . Jonathan slowly falls for the suicidal Rachel ( Tricia Vessey ) who constantly tests him , unable to believe that anyone could really love her .
Through his growing affection for Rachel and his friendship with Toby , Jonathan learns to accept his feelings and embrace life .
