Produced by Teddy Robin and directed by Ng Siu Kong, the 1982 film Once Upon a Rainbow uses a television studio as background to tell the story of two young women of different fates. Appropriate enough, the film starred television starlets of the time Wong Cho Si and Chong Jing Yee, both of whom have long left the industry, making this film a particularly rare treat. A TVB acting class graduate herself, Wong Cho Si is most remembered as Princess Hua Zheng in Legend of the Condor Heroes. Chong Jing Yee meanwhile, is best known for her starring role in another Felix Wong drama, Soldier of Fortune.

Coming from a broken family, Angel (Wong Cho Si) places all her hopes and dreams on best friend Fong (Chong Jing Yee). Fong is currently taking acting classes at the TV studio that Angel works at, and both of them develop a liking for the same guy. When Angel finds out about Fong's feelings, she backs out of the budding relationship, not wanting Fong to get hurt. Troubled by own her heart and conscience, Angel slowly loses her voice, giving up on herself. On the same day Fong graduates, she receives news that Angel has committed suicide.

方天慧與安琪是好同學，畢業後各奔前程。慧考入訓練班，而安琪則在錄音室工作。後來，安琪認識了一個高大英俊的男孩子，此人乃慧之夢中情人張家明。家明追求安琪，安琪雖對其有好感，但不願橫刀奪愛，只有婉拒家明。聖誕夜，安琪卻由於孤寂與家明發生了關係，事後因內疚而自暴自棄。慧發現家明根本不喜歡自己，全心全意投入訓練班的訓練，取得優異成績。慧邀請安琪往參觀訓練班畢業晚會，安琪遲遲未到。晚會已接近尾聲，安琪仍未出現，慧撥通安琪家的電話，卻接獲安琪自殺的消息。

Fong and Angie were close friends when they were in school but departed after graduation. Fong continued her further education in a training center. Angie worked in a studio and had a crush on a guy classmate Cheung, who was also attracted to Angie. Though Angie had feeling on Cheung, but she found out about Fong's infatuation so refused to date Cheung. One night, Angie was particularly low in spirits, she went to see Cheung at the club where he sang. She ended up sleeping with him. Stricken by a guilty conscience, Angie refused to see Cheung again. Fong found that Cheung didn't like him so she dedicated herself into course. At the graduation performance, Fong invited Angie to go but Angle didn't show up. Fong kept calling Angie and eventually she got through and found out that Angie had drown in the swimming pool.
