"I think I've seen you before." This is no cliché pick-up line in Taiwan director Hou Ji Ran's (When A Wolf Falls In Love With A Sheep) fantasy romantic film One Day; instead, it is the start of a lifelong promise. Starring Golden Horse-winning actress Nikki Hsieh (Reflections) and Golden Bell Best Actor Bryan Chang (GF*BF), One Day is a simple love story made powerful by its creative storytelling techniques and stylish shooting.
In her blurry dreams, a ferry clerk (Nikki Hsieh) from Kaohsiung repeatedly sees a man (Bryan Chang) who shouts something at her that she can't hear. On her voyage to Kinmen, the girl meets a mysterious solider who tells her that they will fall in love in the future, and that now they are meeting in a dream that can change the girl's destiny. Dubious, she shockingly finds that everyone on the ferry is gone and gets chased by an Indian who is lost at sea. She begins to think that what the solider says may be true and he probably is the one she keeps seeing in her dreams. One year later, regardless of what she has been told, she finds this man and they become lovers. Their happiness lasts until the blurry dream turns into reality and tragedy strikes.
"Would you still get married with dad if you could go back in time?" The movie poses such a question while offering Hou's perspective, which gears towards the choice made by Nikki. Although starring young actors Nikki and Bryan, the story goes beyond first love to tell of love of a lifetime and love beyond death. By going back and forth between dreams and reality, the movie compares Nikki's initial hesitation and the drastic actions that follow. The resulting impact from these conflicts is as surprising as it is compelling.
The simple yet stylish shooting helps shift viewers' attention to the plot. The movie starts out slowly with very little dialogue in the first 15 minutes. In fact, it paves the way for surprises as it progresses. The pace picks up when Nikki finds out that she is all alone on a ferry. Then, the appearance of an Indian with a hammer also caught me off guard. The movie's running time is spent almost entirely on the interaction between Nikki and Bryan with hardly any other side development, adding weight to their commitment. All these efforts are in line with the beautiful light tones of the film which echo with the purity of their love.
There are no passionate love scenes nor heartbreaking lines or fancy wardrobe, only honest and genuine love that melts your heart. It's exactly the simplicity throughout the movie that manages to deliver such an overwhelming message towards the end. Hou's ability to use such a complicated storytelling technique to tell an ordinary love story of two people sharing the same dream deserves much applause.
Wise or foolish, sense or sensibility, it is all but a choice in our hands.
