An unforgettable voice

It speaks volumes about the special quality of Wan Fang's voice that I still have a very clear memory of the first time I heard it. It was 1995 and I was riding in a taxi on Beijing's Fuxingmenwai Dajie, when Wan Fang's rendition of "Tea for Two" came over the taxi's radio. As soon as I could, I went shopping for one of her CDs and I have remained a fan ever since then. This 2-CD compilation provides a good overview of Wan Fang's recordings. The listener is immediately captivated by Wan Fang's clear, delicate voice, a voice which seems fragile, but which pierces to the heart with its emotional power. No one else sounds quite like her. The songs collected here are well-crafted, memorable compositions. I have two small quibbles about this album: First, some of these songs sometimes rely too heavily on electronic keyboards to reproduce sounds of different instruments; they would sound better with a real orchestra. Second, a couple of the songs are set in keys that require Wan Fang to strain to reach the highest notes; this could have been avoided simply by setting the songs in a lower key. Don't be deterred. These are very minor caveats. Wan Fang's beautiful voice should not be missed! I very highly recommend this album as a good starting point for exploring her work. |

Lovely...

| I hesitated to buy this because I don't usually buy compilation CDs for 2 reasons: 1. I typically already have the songs on regular CDs by the artist and 2. often, some songs are quite old and outdated. However, I had never heard of this artist, so I had none of her CDs and decided to take a chance. I'm so glad I did! The number of songs for the price is remarkable, as is the voice. Yes, some songs do indeed sound a bit old...but what lovely piano. Piano is timeless, so the dates of the songs are somewhat irrelevant in this case. And the singer has such a calm voice, I can see myself playing this CD (or should I say BOTH CDs) quite often. They are serene and peaceful. Neither CD contains songs that I would call current pop, but both have marvelous ballads that both soothe the soul while lifting it. I sincerely hope this singer produces a more up-to-date CD soon though. While this one is fantastic, I would like to see what she would do with her talented soprano vocals on more modern ballad arrangements. Overall, though...if you want a CD to relax to and enjoy despite the dates on the songs, this is a bargain at YESASIA's price! You can't afford NOT to buy it. It's a perfect staple CD that any collection could only benefit from. And if this singer comes out with an all-new CD, I'll be first in line to buy it! I really hope she does have plans for something brand-new very soon. She is VERY good. |
