YesAsia Editorial Description
In her latest album One to One, Fan Wei Qi (affectionately known as Fan Fan) appears in a very different image as compared to Original Dream. Far more feminine and mature than she was when she debuted in 2000, Fan Fan has become an icon representing a new generation of metropolitan women. This version comes with a bonus DVD consisting of 5 MVs.
The title track "One to One" is penned by music genius David Tao. For the song's music video, over NT$1.5 million was budgeted to produce a spectacular audio-visual record of Fan Fan. The MV for another up-tempo track "It's You" shows Fan Wei Qi in many differet looks - retro, sporty, punk, bohemian. Her hit duet "If" with rising star Angela Chang is also included in this album.

Beautiful
Beautiful
If you like ballads, this is the album for you. Fanfan is fantastic at singing these songs. Her voice is on the deep side and very smooth, which I like. It's not piercing or too sweet-sounding. I didn't like Track 1 or 5. I know she needed some faster, more upbeat songs to break up all the slow ones but she sounds much better singing the slower ones. They were also composed better. Track 6, the duet with Angela Chang, is brilliantly composed. Their voices complement each other perfectly. This is great for lovers of those pretty, slow K-songs.

SO GREAT, I BOUGHT IT TWICE...
SO GREAT, I BOUGHT IT TWICE...
I already owned the first version of this CD, but when I saw this version came with 5 MVs...I bought it again just for them. And am I glad I did! It might sound silly to buy a CD twice merely to obtain MVs, but in FanFan's case...it was a wonderful investment. The music is wonderful (as I reviewed it already on the first edition, I will focus on the MVs here), but the videos are stunning. FanFan has really matured both in appearance and style. Her videos are elegant and masterfully produced. And unlike some MVs I have (like Stephy Tang's)...FanFan's coloration is perfect and her mouth is moving in correct time with the words. I love the 2 videos where she has bangs...it's a nice, grown-up look to her face. The first video is a bit more like her older ones (a bit juvenile, but fun)...my 5 year old son LOVES it because of her dancing and all the action and different costumes. The second video is truly elegant with FanFan on a beach in a white limo. The third is a masterpiece of simplicity with FanFan in a white flowing gown sitting on a wall with a guy playing a lone guitar...beautiful. The fourth video is "If", and I don't see the implications that apparently some people do with her duet with Angela. They are singing together and doing a perfect job of it. This video features gorgeous over-lays of twining vines and lace over the actual footage and shows FanFan at her most lovely. Both girls look great and sound better. The scenes are quite touching and moving. I also think this is the best song on both the CD and DVD (although it's hard to choose, because all are stand-outs). The fifth video is a little boring...it shows FanFan as a physchologist dealing with patients when she obviously is having problems of her own. I like the song, but the video is not my favorite. I think the best are 2-4. Anyway, just to own the DVD is worth the price of this item. Unlike most MVs that are played once, this one is a repeat in my DVD player! I also like that there is no commentary (like on Jasmine Leong's) distracting from the videos. It's just straight music from start to finish. A true and rare delight. I adore FanFan both in audio AND video. A star to the depths of her being.

Wow!
Wow!
I thought that FanFan was one of those underrated, ignored singers...but it seems to be that her new album is selling very well-sold out after jsut one month?? I didn't know that so many people would buy her album, but nonetheless I am very happy. I wanted to buy this but I came too late....I hope Yesasia will re-stock it soon><

Fan Fan wows again
Fan Fan wows again
Fan Fan has done it again with her melodious voice in this new album. Her voice is so sophisticated and true. It is as if she sings just for you. There is no pretention or fallacy. What you hear and see is truly who she is. It is a shame that such a wonderful singer is not more highly recognized when her talents surpass 98% of her female contemporaries. Keep at it Fan!

This truly is an amazing album. It really enrages me to think that there is as talented a singer as Fan Wei Qi in the world and yet she still doesn't have as much recognition as other singers such as Stefanie Sun and Jolin Tsai, despite having more of a technical grasp on some areas of music than they do. Her voice has a distinct clarity and tone to it that is incomparable to any other singer. Her voice has its own individual texture and the control she exerts over her talent is the key to Fan Wei Qi's technical success in singing this collection of well chosen songs. The opening track on the album is the theme tune to Neutrogena's (for which Fan Fan has been the representative of for 3 years now) 2005 beauty campaign. It is an eclectic mix of retro-punk with a modern cheerleader-style texture that reminds you of 'Hey Mickey' by Toni Basil. Fan Fan takes on a different tone here with her outgoing style and brings a rich tone to the song without overpowering the light nature of it. The second track is the title track 'One on One' written by David Tao, attracts the most attention to the listener. It has it's own captivating soul and it is instantly recognisable as a work of David Tao's because of the frequent high note lilts and the dips into and out of the high end of the songs. It has David Tao's signature light tone, strong harmonies (which Fan Fan recorded with David Tao himself) with light instrumentals. All this just highlights Fan Fan's talent as the light background makes her clearly controlled voice stand out even more against the transparent background of her the music. This album also contains songs that Fan Fan has written herself, such as 'Sleepless' (track 3)which is a song about losing sleep over meaningless things and allows Fan Fan to show off her lyrical ability as well as her vocal talent. The duet with Angela Chang is perplexing but soothing to the ear. The lyrics are very hard to read into so you can't really read into what the emotion of the song is, but the vocal ability of both women is astonishing on this particular track and is guaranteed to captivate any listener with the harmonies and counter-melodies. The ballads of particular note on this album are 'Til the End' and 'You don't love him that much' in which Fan Fan exudes mood and emotion throughout the songs and creates a heartbreaking atmosphere throughout the entirety of each song. Yet with each new song she brings a new feeling of depth and understanding, in that she realises that although these songs are ballads, there are different approaches to singing each one. A refreshing track is 'Love You that much' which has an interesting 80's feel to it with the electrified beats in the background and although it's a retro song, it still has a lot of new techniques held within it. It's a modified retro song, if you will. It's about splitting up with a partner who just simply selfish and Fan Fan's conviction and enunciation of every single word highlights the anger and the emancipation that is felt with the break up. It's an empowering song that will speak out to a lot of females especially. Fan Wei Qi is a truly truly talented singer and she deserves as much recognition and praise as singers of Stefanie Sun status. Fan Wei Qi is so underrated and so many people out there don't know who she is and this album is the perfect opportunity for an introduction to Fan Fan's world. All in all, this album is a must have item for any lover of Taiwan music out there. The important thing when listening to this album is that you sit alone in a room without any distraction so that you can fully appreciate the technique and the talent that this young woman exudes; so that you can truly be On on One with Fan Fan. |
