Harry Woltz, a charismatic veteran Chicago homicide police officer who has aligned himself with a drug runner to supplement his meager salary. One evening at his favorite night spot, Woltz has a one night stand with Evans Farrow, a gorgeous yet demented nymphomaniac. Regrettably, Woltz confides his illegal activities to her. Woltz hatches a discreet plan with Evan's husband, John Farrow, a man destroyed by his wife's promiscuous lifestyle. Woltz proposes a plan to kill Evans, but when the fateful night arrives, John can't summon the power to do it, and Woltz is forced to pull the trigger himself. The case is eventually assigned to Wlotz's protege, Gwen Buckley. During the investigation, Gwen develops an attraction for John, and Woltz counsels her on how to investigate John. His instruction however, motivated by his own involvement with the murder. Gwen later finds out that Woltz was seen with Evans at the club prior to her death......
