Unfulfilled potential

This collection of Orange Pekoe's "best" songs came as a disappointment to me. Tracks 2 and 17 are terrific songs, beautifully constructed and well played. However, too many of the songs on this album employ structures that are boringly repetitive and the singer too often sings in her harsher, less controlled lower register. When Orange Pekoe sticks to deftly written jazz numbers with lilting vocals, they create magic. Unfortunately, that magic doesn't happen often enough. |
