片中以葛香亭飾演的中層公務員為第一人稱，敘述他患小兒痲痺症的女兒如何克服心理障礙，天助自助的經過。影片中的主人翁名為若蘭，導演巧的以眾人養蘭花來象徵週遭親友對若蘭的呵護。不同於李行的幾部健康寫實主義電影，本片不再把視覺景觀停在鄉野、海邊，而是記錄了台北市長巷中日式平房中的生活，影片中的人物大都十階分完滿，具有中國人的傳統美德，因此戲中的衝並未造成真正推動戲劇的動力，然而由於歌頌人的意志和親情溫暖的正面主題，使該片囊金馬獎包括最佳影片、最佳導演等六項大獎。
