太平洋戦争末期、冨屋食堂を営む鳥濱トメ（岸惠子）は、知覧が特攻基地となったことを知った。トメに会いに来ては飛び立っていく特攻隊員たち。二度と帰らない彼らを引き留めることも出来ず、複雑な思いを胸に秘め、母親代わりとして慈愛の心で彼らを見守り続けていく。悩みながらも軍人としての本分を尽くそうとする中西（徳重聡）は遺品の郵送をトメに託し、仲間に先立たれて死を急ぐ板東（窪塚洋介）は、死んだ後に特攻に志願したことを父親に伝えて欲しいとトメに頼んだ。飛行機の故障で基地に戻って来る田端（筒井道隆）は、トメに「日本は戦争に負ける」とつぶやいた。やがて終戦。しかし、それで全てが終わったわけではなかった。生き残った特攻隊員は、罪の意識を抱え、生の意味を問い続ける。トメは彼らの試練をもまざまざと目の当りにすることになったのである。 ＴＶスポット／劇場予告／特報
