１８８０年代のアメリカ南西部。大牧場主マットには、先妻の間に生まれたベンら３人の息子と、今の妻であるネイティヴ・アメリカン女性との子ジョーの家族がいた。あるとき、銅の精錬所から流れ出た鉱毒のためマットの家畜が大量に死ぬ事件が起き、抗議の果ての激しい銃撃戦によってマット側は精錬所に訴えられ、ジョーが入獄。そしてマットは、農場の一部を精錬所に売ろうと図るベンたちに叛かれ、病床についてしまう……。
