Director: Ozu Yasujiro

A middle-class couple experience a crisis in their arranged marriage and finally reconcile over a simple dish that's at once most ungarnished and most Japanese. This is one of Ozu's funniest and most "active" films, with frequently moving camera and numerous car rides, train journeys and planes taking off. Filmed from an old script written in 1940 after Ozu had returned from the war, the film is considered one of his best and most important works, but Ozu himself calls it "regrettably unsuccessful". The title of the film comes from a proverbial expression that celebrates simple taste in life.

A marriage in peril Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Flavour of Green Tea over Rice" tells of a married couple that, for years, have been married in name only. Their marriage was an arranged one and the wife clearly has no feelings for her husband other than disregard. She calls him "Mr. Thick-head" to her friends and believes him to be dull and dim-witted. She lies to him, shows him no affection, and pays no attention to him.

On his part, the husband leads a fairly plodding life of a mid-level Japanese salaryman. He works hard and pays the bills to support his wife in a comfortable style, including having a household maid. It appears that just about the only fun he has is going to an old war buddy's pachinko parlor. Yet he never complains and shows himself to be a good friend and a loving uncle to his niece.

In short, the married couple acts like two distant planets that have almost no relation to each other, except they live under the same roof. What direction will their marriage take? Will their marriage remain an empty shell or is their hope for them to grow together? That is the question this movie poses and the film's life-affirming resolution feels very authentic.

All of Director Ozu's stylistic quirks are on display in this film. There are the lingering shots that seem to run just a bit too long and the quick-cutting conversational shots in which the characters look directly into or just past the camera as they converse.

"The Flavour of Green Tree over Rice" is a very human drama that all people stuck in troubled marriages should take the time to watch. I can highly recommend it for a general audience.
